On Saturday, the protests over school conditions, teacher shortages, inequality, and the rising cost of living turned into the worst unrest in years. Masked far-left groups smashed their way into the 19th-century Limoges town hall, set it ablaze, and brought down the clock tower and belfry. The mayor called it a premeditated arson attack and said people inside feared for their lives. Nationwide, nearly 1,800 people were arrested, more than 500 police, gendarmes, and firefighters were injured, shops were looted, and public buildings were targeted. Macron later issued statements condemning the violence and promising prosecutions, but the optics of the concert the night before have drawn the obvious criticism: He doesn’t act like he cares that the country is burning. A 16-year-old walked into Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, just after 1 p.m. Thursday and murdered three children — ages 5, 8, and 11 — and a teacher. Another child and a teacher were left in critical condition. He forced entry by shooting at the locked doors with his mother’s shotgun. Then a student’s dad who saw him go in pursued him inside and ended it. Dispatch audio caught what happened before officers even cleared the building: The shooter had been neutralized, possibly by a father at the school. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz later confirmed that a community member who watched the suspect enter followed him in and engaged him. The teen was dead when police arrived, roughly three minutes after the first calls. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek (D) thanked the community member who “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life.” This is the story that keeps getting buried under the usual script. Locked doors did not stop the shooter. A legally armed parent did. The same people who insist that only law enforcement can handle these moments now have another case where a civilian was already inside and finished the job before the first officer reached the hallway.

Texas Democrat and seminarian James Talarico just sat across from a Catholic voter at a CNN town hall and told her the Bible is silent on abortion. She didn’t let it slide. Jody Hunt, a self-described one-issue Catholic voter, was asking how she could trust him to protect the most innocent. Talarico’s answer: “We’re both Christians, and the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion.” He argued that they could still find common ground by reducing unplanned pregnancies through other policy levers. Hunt came back immediately: The Bible is not silent. She pointed to the Ten Commandments and “Thou shalt not kill.” She added that Catholics take real insult when people claim the Bible has nothing to say on the subject. Talarico responded that if he believed abortion was murder and violated the Commandments, he wouldn’t support it. He also claimed Texas’s current ban has women dying in emergency room parking lots and that authentically pro-life people should be disturbed by those outcomes. This is the same candidate who has repeatedly used his faith to defend abortion access, including past claims that Jesus never talked about it and that the Bible is silent. The exchange happened live while he was trying to win over skeptical Texas voters in a tight Senate race against Ken Paxton. Regular Americans who actually read the Bible are tired of progressive politicians rewriting Scripture to fit their platform and then calling it Christian. The double standard is obvious: The Commandments suddenly become optional the moment they conflict with the preferred policy.

The latest Marist poll of Texas likely voters just dropped, and the Senate race is a dead heat. Democrat James Talarico is at 47%, Republican Ken Paxton at 45%. Independents are breaking for Talarico at 52%, while a majority of the same voters still think Paxton is going to win the seat anyway. That gap between the numbers and the expectation is the real story here. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is holding a 49-45 edge over Gina Hinojosa for governor among likely voters, with seven in 10 Texans convinced the incumbent will win. The generic congressional ballot shows Republicans up five points. But Trump’s job approval in Texas is upside down at 46% approve to 54% disapprove, and 43% of likely voters say their family finances have gotten worse over the last year. Thirty-eight percent say their congressional vote is mainly against the president. These are the numbers driving the competitiveness, not some sudden leftward shift in the state. The partisan divides are sharp, the money is flowing, and the early-vote window is about to open. A White House analysis of selected DSA platform items put the 10-year cost at roughly $49 trillion, or about $355,000 per household, largely driven by Medicare for All plus open borders and related policies. For regular Americans watching border enforcement, public safety, and household budgets, the question is simple: How far does “addition” go before the coalition no longer represents the people who have to live with the results?

Trump declared an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine “effective immediately.” He posted it after Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries that the administration blamed for pushing U.S. diesel to $6.28 a gallon. Days earlier, he announced a deal for Russia to send hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel to ease pressure on American drivers and truckers. Zelenskyy called the diesel purchase a “betrayal” and then said the ceasefire announcement itself was news to him. He indicated that Ukraine would support a mutual halt if Russia stops hitting Ukrainian energy sites, but Moscow has not confirmed. This is at least the fourth time Trump has publicly announced an energy truce; earlier versions, including the September one, unraveled within days as strikes continued. Every refinery or power plant hit tightens diesel supply and keeps pump prices elevated heading into winter. Ukraine says the strikes cut Russian revenue. The administration says the same strikes raise costs for American workers. Both can be true, which is why the mutual stop idea keeps returning — and why it keeps failing when one side treats it as optional.

The Pentagon just settled the argument: Nidal Hasan's firing squad will be live streamed. On November 5, 2009, Army Maj. Nidal Hasan walked into the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood, shouted "Allahu akbar," and opened fire on soldiers lined up for deployment clearances. Thirteen people were killed. Thirty-two were wounded. He called it jihad. President Trump approved a firing squad. Pete Hegseth says it happens at Fort Hood on December 3 at 1 p.m. Central, the same base and the same hour Hasan opened fire. Soldiers with rifles, and the public gets to watch, because people need to understand there are serious consequences. Asked if Hasan had reached out for mercy, Hegseth said he did not care. The Pentagon then said the execution will be live streamed. Carried out, it would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961, and the first the military has put on the internet.

Oct. 7 didn't end. The survivors still can't go back to work. Three years after Hamas murdered and kidnapped civilians at the Nova music festival and in places like Kibbutz Be'eri, the New York Post checked on the people who lived. Recovery is not what they found. Nova survivor Rom El-Hai, 32, hid in a forest while gunfire passed. He came out without his job, his girlfriend, or his friends, and he says the PTSD and depression are still intense. People tell survivors that making it out means life snaps back. It did not. Photographer Shye Klein still cannot shoot events. A DJ stopping the music sends his heart racing, because that silence is what he heard when the killing started. UJA Federation of New York CEO Eric Goldstein says only 20% of Nova survivors have kept continuous work for more than three months. A large number are out of work. Some are homeless, living in cars, with no financial support. Former hostage Evyatar David, held 738 days, separated the two fights: surviving captivity is one thing and full rehabilitation is another. Tribe of Nova CEO Seth Davis says the anxiety runs deeper now than a year ago, because the outside world already moved on. Klein's line should stick: It is never going to go back to normal, for anybody.

Twelve American B-1 bombers did not leave a British base by accident. The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times report that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was behind a complex, multipronged plan to destroy U.S. aircraft and kill American service members at RAF Fairford, about 90 miles west of London. All 12 bombers went back to their home stations in the United States over the weekend. Some officials say the plot looked loosely like Ukraine’s Operation Spider Web, the truck-launched drone strikes on Russian bomber bases. This was not a strike that already happened. It was intelligence serious enough that the planes left. That pullout came days after British police stopped an alleged terror plot near the same airfield. Five British nationals were arrested over a suspected van bomb attack; a sixth man, a U.K.-Iranian national, was later arrested. All were released on bail. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were strong indications the Iranian government had a hand in that earlier plot. Vice President JD Vance said the bombers were moved out of an abundance of caution and that Iran is still doing what it has done for 49 years: terrorism against the United States and a lot of other people. President Trump told reporters there were some threats, the jets did not fly out by accident, and he was not going to leave them sitting there. If Iran can push American bombers off an allied base without firing a shot, the next question is what else they think they can reach. Were the bombers right to leave, yes or no? If this base was a target, should U.S. aircraft still be parked on British soil at all?
