This week, Folklore Forensics reopens one of the most famous cases in European folklore. Two children are abandoned in a German forest. Days later, they emerge barefoot and burned, carrying food, silver, and a dead woman's wedding ring. Behind them is an isolated cottage, a cold oven, and the body of the woman they claim intended to eat them.

But the surviving evidence complicates the fairy tale.
