What does it mean to abide in Jesus? When Mike looks at the vine analogy in John 15, he makes some parallels to everything in our lives. How long do you think a branch lives off of the vine? What do you have or what can you do apart from Jesus and from resting in Him and trusting Him for everything? Let's make a difference in the lives of others because we abide in Jesus and count on Him, not ourselves, for everything.
What do we trust? Do we trust Jesus or our behavior, or some belief about God?
I catch myself trusting my actions and my resources for everything I do. I regularly pray that God would make my actions effective. I pray that he would provide money or people to do things. I don't often pray for his power, grace and mercy.
This passage talks about righteousness. If I can be right with God by his doing, then why don't I trust him for other things? In Mark 2:1-11, they lower a man through the roof of the house to ask Jesus to heal him. Jesus initially forgives his sins. The Pharisees who were listening were astonished. No one but God can forgive sins. Then Jesus said, "So that you may know that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins," he said to the paralytic, "get up, take up your pallet and go home." Jesus healed this man to show us all he has the power to do the physical. The physical is easier than the spiritual, but we don't believe that because we're physical creatures.
Christ's death was necessary for our salvation. Elsewhere, Paul asks, "He who did not spare his own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him, freely give us all things." (Romans 8:32 NASB)
Let's challenge ourselves to trust Jesus today for something physical. Our righteousness is certain. Christ didn't die needlessly. And if we can trust him for our salvation, we can trust him for our provision and for our work situations. Is Jesus asking you to give something away? Do you need to buy someone's lunch or give an extravagant tip? What is Jesus asking you to do? Do it today. Minister to those around you and watch God work in the physical and spiritual realms.

In the verse before this, James tells us we are the first fruits. We're the early harvest. Jesus saved us, but then he left us here so we might make a difference in the lives of others. Do you know how to make that difference when every person is different? No. That's why we need to listen.
We listen to God and then we listen to them. When you listen, others will open up. They'll tell you what's important to them. Listening is a ministry all by itself. And as you listen more, God will show you how to bless them. Your listening shows appreciation and it also informs your actions. You get in tune with Jesus, and you learn more about the other person all at the same time.
Yesterday, you made time by coming in early or staying late. Today, use some of that time to listen. Find someone who is not listened to very much and ask their thoughts on a business issue. Ask them what they think about something. Ask someone from a different background, or skin color or ethnic background to give you their thoughts on an issue and avoid stating your own. Ask God to use you and then listen to the next person you interact with.
Thanks for listening to this podcast and being a marketplace minister. And if you're part of this mission trip, please also comment about today in our private Facebook Group. Are you not on the trip? Then go to MarketplaceMissionTrip.com and sign up for the next one!

Sharing Your Story
The most powerful thing we can do to spread the word is to share our personal story of Christ. Jared and Mike discuss the massive amounts of benefits and relationships you can build by utilizing your story to bring about change in the world. How do you tell your story? Spreading the gospel is not easy so your story needs to matter. It must be genuine and your truth. Make sure that you are speaking something that is only real to you and can't be argued because it is your truth and not someone else's. We are each unique in this way and when your story is told from a genuine place, it won't fall on deaf ears!
Interview Quote
"Take time to be genuine because it goes a long way... once you open that door, people are willing to share what they are struggling with"

This may be the best job summary of a marketplace missionary. Consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ. Based on what Paul says earlier in this chapter, we can die to sin. I tell people I began to bend my life to follow Jesus. But for many of my early years as a Christian, I had trouble following him. I wanted him to do things my way.
Over time, as I read his word and spent time with other Christ-followers, I began to see the benefits of surrendering to Jesus. Little by little, I surrendered parts of my life. And I still must do more. I wish I could have given up my life easier, because every time I do, I experience God. I see him work in and around me. He's always at work, but I never see him when I'm focused on myself.
Daily at work, and in my life, I must train myself to stay alive to God. Our world doesn't operate like he exists. So we must train, practice, evaluate and repeat. We learn some new method, like intentionally praying for our coworkers. We practice it. Then we ask God to give us feedback on how we did. And finally, we commit to tweak it or do it again and again. As we go through this feedback loop, we grow as a Christ-follower. And we see him make us alive to him.
Today, ask God to make you aware of one place where you need to die to yourself and one way you can become more alive in him. I am confident he will deliver. He wants us all moving one notch closer to him every day. So what are you waiting for?

I recently discussed this chapter of 1 Corinthians 13 and even this verse a bit in episode 234. But this verse needs more attention because today's topic is appreciating others. Paul tells us that even if we give away everything we have, but we don't love others, it profits us nothing. What kind of profit do you think he's talking about?
Our service to others, without love (or in a business setting) appreciation for them doesn't count. But you may ask what I mean by "counting" and I would tell you the word translated "profits" here is what I'm talking about. In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus tells us to lay up or store up treasure in heaven rather than treasure on earth. This is part of a longer section of the Sermon on the Mount about rewards.
There are rewards for us, both here on earth and in heaven. The key to those rewards seems to be our love and appreciation for others. When we do something for their good, because of our love for them, then it counts. If we do it for any other reason, that's another story. So today, ask God to give you an appreciation for others. I've wrestled with this in my past, and God continues to work on me so that I won't judge others or label them, but appreciate them and bless them.
Everything you give away today because you appreciate someone else matters. That's why appreciating others is our #2 daily activity on the Marketplace Mission Trip, too. Let's ask God to increase our appreciation for others so that it overflows and they become aware of our appreciation of them, and God's love for them, too.
