The amount of fire in this chapter was brutal. So of course, I had to use fire in my treat! Right? This week we discuss book 5, chapter 3: The Muster of Rohan from "The Return of the King".

The Riders of Rohan gather, the Red Arrow arrives, and Théoden prepares to lead 6,000 horsemen into the shadow of Mordor. In this chapter, Merry feels smaller than ever, Aragorn is presumed extremely dead, Dunharrow gets deeply creepy, and the hosts of Rohan ride toward Minas Tirith with very little hope and, somehow, excellent snack energy.

Today's "Food For Thought": The Red Arrow of Gondor

Melt milk chocolate, tempering if you want a shiny, firm finish. Dip pretzel rods in chocolate and cool on parchment. If the chocolate gets too thick, gently rewarm it. Melt dark chocolate and add black food coloring if desired. Pipe thick 2-inch lines onto parchment, then drag one side with a fork to shape them like feathers. Make more than you think you’ll need, then freeze until firm.

Cut the centers out of large strawberries and dry them well. To assemble, wear food-safe gloves to avoid fingerprints. Trim excess chocolate from the base of each pretzel rod. Working with frozen feathers, gently melt the smooth edge of each feather against a warm plate, then press it onto the pretzel rod and hold until set. Dry the inside of each strawberry again, pipe in a dollop of chocolate, and press the pretzel rod into place, handling as little as possible.Once you are done swearing about chocolate, admire your creations!

Here's a less disappointing cake. Use your favorite white cake recipe or even box mix... the almond cream filling is the star of the show here! Adapted from https://hungryrabbit.com/2012/06/chocolate-cake-w-almond-cream-filling/. I halved the recipe since it was only for 4 small cakes.1/2 cup whole milk1 tblsp almond paste (or almond flour if you don't have almond paste)2 large egg yolks1/4 cup granulated sugar3/4 tsp cornstarch1/8 tsp fine sea salt1 tblsp Amaretto (or 1 tsp almond extract- less if you used almond paste)1/4 cup heavy creamHeat milk and almond paste/flour in a saucepan until just simmering.Whisk together egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a bowl.Very gradually add hot milk into egg yolks while whisking (temper the egg yolks). Add mixture back to saucepan.Cook on medium heat, whisking CONSTANTLY until the mixture thickens and bubbles. This cooks the egg yolks and cornstarch.Add amaretto or almond extract, cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.Whip your heavy cream to stiff peaks and then fold into almond cream to lighten it up. You might not need to add it all- stop when it's the texture you want. Refrigerate again at least 30 minutes.

Todays "Food for Thought": Shelob's Venom Cocktail

After Sam stabbed Shelob, she had green ooze coming from her eye and left a trail of green-yellow slime. I thought it would be fun to drink it. I know it's not the same as her venom but oh well, it makes a better name! I was inspired by an "Ecto Cooler" cocktail that had the right color. Going off that recipe, the base of the drink was a tangerine/orange juice. To make it green, I added blue curacao, which conveniently happens to be orange-flavored. It turned green, but not green ENOUGH, so I did add some food coloring.

-Tangerine/orange juice

-Blue curacao

-Vodka (or any clear liquor)

-Green food coloring

-Club soda/citrus flavored seltzer

I made small shooters for the podcast, but you could play with proportions to make a larger cocktail. Start with about half a glass of juice, then add enough blue curacao to get it pretty green. Add food coloring until you're happy with the color. I used thick gel food coloring and mixed it with gin to thin it and make it pourable. At this point, the drink is very weak, so add as much liquor as you would like to strengthen it. It's also pretty sweet, so I cut it with some seltzer to lighten it up a bit.

The crab legs are entirely extraneous, but they made such perfect spider legs!!I used this recipe: https://sugarspunrun.com/maryland-crab-cake-recipe/#recipe. It was FABULOUS! While they were baking, I steamed some dungeoness crab legs in the oven. To create the spider, I made one extra large crab cake and one smaller one. Once baked (the crab cakes, not me), I pushed candy eyeballs into the smaller one to make the head, and then painstakingly balanced the crab legs around the body. Todays "Food for Thought": Tower of the Moon Cocktail

Minas Ithil, the Tower of the Moon, was said to glow with imprisoned moonlight long ago. Lucky for us, tonic water happens to glow like moonlight under a black light. Therefore, a gin & tonic in a champagne flute under black light makes a perfect Tower of the Moon. Keep it pretty heavy on tonic for the glow to work well.
