As we close in on the home straight for the 2020-21 EFL campaign, the international break offers the ideal opportunity to assess the season so far for the four Yorkshire clubs in Leagues One and Two.

Hull City and Doncaster Rovers are pushing hard for promotion in the third tier while, further down, Bradford City and Harrogate Town both hope they can gatecrash the playoffs with a late surge.

IT had probably been coming, but Chris Wilder’s departure from Sheffield United was still a sad moment when it arrived.

Having supported the club as a boy, then had the privilege of playing for the Blades, Wilder’s dreams were further realised when he was appointed manager in May 2016. Two promotions and a return to the Premier League sealed his legendary status among fans, with that first season back in the top flight proving a particularly memorable one.

But things started to unravel thereafter, with – somewhat remarkably – the Blades now facing a return to the Championship. The YP’s football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to reflect on Wilder’s time in charge at Bramall Lane and what needs to happen next at the club. 

Staying in the Premier League, the trio also cast an eye over Leeds United’s Friday night trip to Craven Cottqage to take on a fulham team desperate to haul themselves out of the bottom three.

HAVING come out of the first Test in Chennai on such a high, England have quickly been brought crashing back down to earth in their series against India, after suffering two heavy defeats.

Virat Kohli’s team were quick to exact revenge in Chennai to level the series and rubbed England’s noses into the dust of Ahmedabad when they won by ten wickets inside two days. The YP’s cricket writer, Chris Waters, joins host Phil Harrison to discuss the situation England find themselves in with just one more Test to play, again in Ahmedabad.

AS promised, Chris Waters and Phil Harrison have taken far less time to return to the podcast-stratosphere, leaving it barely two weeks since their last offering, instead of the previous time lapse ... of around 16 months.

Buoyed by England's magnificent 227-run win in Chennai in the first Test match against India, the duo hail the contributions of, not only captain Joe Root, but the likes of Dom Sibley, Dom Bess, James Anderson, Jack Leach, Ben Stokes and Dom Sibley - okay, it was a team performance.

We also look ahead to the second Test - again in Chennai - before returning to English shores to discuss Yorkshire's offer to Scarborough Cricket Club of a 10-year deal to ensure County Cricket returns annually to North Marine Road.

AFTER far, far too long away Chris Waters finds time in his busy schedule to grant host Phil Harrison a few minutes to chat about England's impressive 2-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka and, in particular, focus on the contribution by Yorkshire-born captain, Joe Root. It was a triumph, of course, that comes ahead of a tougher series in India, against hosts fresh from pulling off their own series win in Australia earlier in the month.

The pair also discuss the impact of the coronavirus pandmemic on the game and how both the county and national levels have coped in difficult times.

As we continue watching the beautiful game from afar due to Covid-19, our first show of the 2020-21 season sees us take a look at the Premier League and the so far contrasting fortunes of our two Yorkshire clubs, Sheffield United and Leeds United. 

After impressing everybody with the way they embraced the challenge of life in the top-flight last time out, it has been a struggle for Sheffield United this time around, the Blades currently sitting second-bottom after three straight defeats.

By contrast, Leeds United - buoyed by being back in the Premier League for the first time in 16 years, have got off to a relative flier, picking up two wins from their first three games.

LEEDS UNITED are back in the Premier League. It may have been 16 years in the pipeline, but Marcelo Bielsa’s team proved themselves worthy winners of The Championship in a unique 2019-20 campaign and are now preparing to mix it with the English game’s elite.

With a shorter-than-normal off-season, Leeds are having to work fast both on and off the pitch in order to be ready for their top-flight return.
