  • I'm All Right Jack (#47)

Down. With. Unions. This week, Brendan and Jason talk about I'm All Right Jack, an even-handed comedic attack on unions and labour bosses as well as government and corporations. The discussion ranges everywhere from the amazing performance from Peter Sellers to some of the details that don't age particularly well to the massive influence this film had on much more well-known flicks to the origin of the phrase used for the title itself and much more! The guys also roll the dice to find out what they'll be watching next week. • The 39 Steps (#4)

Finally - the Master of Suspense gets his spot! This week, Brendan and Jason dissect one of the early films of quite possibly the most well-known film director of all-time, Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps. What follows is a discussion about the very modern fast pace of the film, how the film may have inspired every wrongfully-accused man-on-the-run movie ever (or even every piece of escapist fiction in general), the portrayal of Canadians and their accents, Hitchcock's very real fear of police and how it factors into the plot and much, much more. The guys also roll the dice to find out what they'll be watching next week. • Blow-Up (#60)

... Or is this podcast just a figment of your imagination? This week, Brendan and Jason attempt to piece the clues together when discussing Michelangelo Antonioni's arthouse classic Blow-Up. The guys talk about everything including the casual sexism, the theory about the 'lost footage' which would partially explain the 'unfinished' ending, the appearance by the Yardbirds and much more. Plus: several famous people show up during the recap of last week's film. The guys also roll the dice to find out what they'll be watching next week. • What Were They Thinking? - Wing Commander
Jason is still out enjoying wedded bliss so we take one more week off and present another episode of What Were They Thinking? where Brendan and Nathan were joined by the soon-to-tie-a-knot co-host to talk all about Wing Commander and how it is probably the worst thing that could have come out of the successful videogame franchise.

Next week: Jason returns at the end of this episode just in time for a dice roll to determine the next movie that will be covered from the BFI Top 100 list.

  • Brazil (#54)

It's the longest most action-packed fact-filled episode of the show thus far! This week, Brendan and Jason return to the list to discuss Terry Gilliam's bizarre satirical film Brazil. The discussion goes everywhere from everything that was on-screen like Robert Deniro's character perhaps being a figment of someone's imagination, the meaning behind all the hallucinatory dreams and the casting of Michael Palin to the off-screen stuff like the titanic struggle to get this movie made to Gilliam's specifics in the first place. Jason is getting married so please enjoy the next two weeks of episodes of What Were They Thinking (a podcast about bad movies hosted by Brendan and Nathan) featuring Jason as a guest. Full List: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BFI_Top_100_British_films Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/forscreenandcountry Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/bfi_pod Our logo was designed by the wonderful Mariah Lirette (https://www.instagram.com/mariahhx) For Screen and Country is sponsored by Podcoin (use the promo code "SCREENPOD" when you sign up and receive 300 BONUS podcoins).

  • And Now For Something Completely Similar: Life at the Top
For the month of July (and first week of August), Brendan and Jason explore movies that are somehow connected to the ones they've previously covered on the BFI Top 100. And now... for something completely similar...

This week, Brendan and Jason round up the discussion with a pretty obscure one. After the success of 1959's Room at the Top there is of course nowhere to go but SEQUEL! Based on the book, Life at the Top concerns the continuing adventures of Joe Lampton, who now lives in "luxury" with his wife Susan and must deal with the annoying interruptions of his new family. Can he ever truly be happy? The guys break down the political messages in this one, discuss the ghostly presence of Simone Signoret, wonder if this truly has a happy ending and much more.

Next week: The guys roll the dice to find out what movie they'll be covering next week.

  • And Now For Something Completely Similar: Sense and Sensibility (2008)
For the month of July, Brendan and Jason explore movies that are somehow connected to the ones they've previously covered on the BFI Top 100. And now... for something completely similar...

This week, Brendan and Jason get prim and proper for the 2008 mini-series adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. The guys get right into it with some fairly problematic comments from the show's writer, analyze the inclusion of Anne Steele (and are bewildered at her accent), question the stereotypically "manly" scenes and much more.

Next week: Original plans be damned! Despite this seemingly being a July-only excursion, we are taking one more week of this And Now For Something Completely Similar series to cover the sequel to Room at the Top (#32 on the list). Brendan and Jason will discuss the 1965 follow-up Life at the Top.

  • And Now For Something Completely Similar: Zulu Dawn
For the month of July, Brendan and Jason explore movies that are somehow connected to the ones they've previously covered on the BFI Top 100. And now... for something completely similar...

This week, the guys discuss Zulu Dawn, the prequel to Zulu (#31 on the BFI Top 100) and the film that tells a much more tragic story. They discuss the level of politics in both films, the presence of way too many characters to form any kind of bond with or care about, the miscasting of Burt Lancaster, some gorgeous cinematography (at times) and a lot more. Plus: we play everyone's favourite gameshow!

Next week: And Now For Something Completely Similar continues with the 2008 mini-series adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility (the 1995 version is #62 on the list)

  • And Now For Something Completely Similar: Doctor Zhivago (2002) (w/Everything I Learned from Movies)
For the month of July, Brendan and Jason explore movies that are somehow connected to the ones they've previously covered on the BFI Top 100. And now... for something completely similar...
For this week, Brendan and Jason welcome their first official guests on the show in the form of Steve and Izzy of Everything I Learned from Movies (https://eilfm.podbean.com) to talk about the 2002 miniseries adaptation of Boris Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago. The two adaptations are compared and contrasted by way of one of these adaptations retaining a LOT more content from the book, characters being completely written out, the ridiculous use of real footage, the horrible slow-motion and the performances of the actors themselves including a very young Keira Knightley.
Next week: Brendan and Jason continue this July mini-series with the 1979 prequel to Zulu (#31 on the BFI Top 100) known as Zulu Dawn.
