What's going on currently in the world, with the Pandemic and the challenge to Democracy in the United States, is a perfect backdrop for this episode of #ForWhatitsWorth
My guest is award winning Director and Writer, Darcy Van Poelgeest (@DVP) Darcy won the Eisner Award in 2019 for the best limited comic series, and is nominated for both the Harvey Award, for the best new book, and the Shuster Award for writing.
His award winning comic novella is a post apocalyptic tale which "follows a group of Canadian rebels fighting to take back their home from the theocratic United Nations of America", where the fate of the free world lies in the hands of a young indigenous girl (Little Bird) and a famous Canadian resistance fighter from the past, "The Axe"

As Canadians, the sport of Hockey is an intrinsic part of our national identity. In this episode of #thespaceinbetween, Cam Brown and I speak with Tom Scanlan, hockey enthusiast, historian, and Curator of a collection of game used hockey sticks from every 500 goal scorer in the NHL.
Perhaps more important than the sticks themselves, are the stories, which go along with them Stories about the great "Rocket" Richard, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, and many more. Tom takes us on a journey through the history of Hockey and in doing so allows us to connect with our own personal memories associated with the game - memories of our first hockey stick, playing shinny on a frozen pond or makeshift outdoor rink; Our heroes, who we sought to emulate during our regular games of ball hockey - "Bobby Hull's at the point; he winds up, he shoots he scores!" ; Where we were when Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in the '72 Canada Russia Series, or simply memories of going with your dad or grandfather to see a game at Maple Leaf Gardens, and if you were really lucky, catching a glimpse of your favourite players as they emerged from the dressing room ...As Canadians, hockey is part of our collective conscience and inspires our#loveofthegame ...#ForWhatit'sWorthwithBlakeMelnick

Comes a time when, as a result of unprecedented events, we need to consider change at the systemic level.
The Pandemic has “laid bare” many problems within our society, and inequities among citizens, which we now must take responsibility for addressing.
The pandemic has illustrated most acutely the growing socio-economic divide - The impact of COVID 19 has been particularly devastating on the poor and the ethnic minorities in our society. As Canadians, we have a front row seat to the drama playing out south of the border which illustrates what can happen when the gap between the haves and have nots; between the rich and poor becomes too large.
The future of our economy is at best uncertain - with mounting job losses, businesses shuttering across the country; the changing nature of work and school; the shifting economic and political relationships between, and amongst nations; the mounting climate crisis.
These are big, complex challenges requiring us to engage in #socialinnovation; To consider bold ideas to protect the health and well being of our citizens and our nation as a whole.
One such idea worthy of serious consideration is the implementation of #BasicIncomeforCanada.
Our guest for this two part episode, #Comesatime is @Hugh Segal, renown political strategist, author, commentator, academic and former senator...He is also the recognized champion of #basicincome for Canada .
In part 2 Hugh and I discuss results from recent studies and pilots related to #basicincome as well as the costs associated with implementation. Hugh also responds to the critics ...#ForWhatit'sWorth

What are we looking for?
We are looking for new music to use for all the intros and outros for Season 3 of #ForWhat it'sWorthwithBlakeMelnick and the #Spaceinbetween; Something that fits the theme and tone of the show: it can be an instrumental piece, a song (a capella or accompanied) but it must be original and not infringe on any existing copyright material.
We will play the clips we receive in Season two to give our audience and subscribers the opportunity to vote for the music they like the best.
Along with playing your clip, we will introduce you and/or your band and provide a brief commentary about your background, inspirations etc.
The first step is to subscribe to the show and familiarize yourself with the theme, tone and direction. Here are direct links to subscribe via iTunes and Spotify:

The recent U.S. elections caused much anxiety for citizens of the United States and for many democratic countries around the world. Four years under the presidency of #DonaldTrump, has changed perceptions of America and has shaken the very foundation of #LiberalDemocracy.
Much of the world breathed a collective sigh of relief when #JoeBiden and the #Democrats won the election by the narrowest of margins. However the President elect has his work cut out for him. The country is severely divided along ideological lines; the Pandemic is out of control, and the economic situation for all but the most wealthy, is dire; Donald Trump refuses to concede the election, and much of the Republican Party refuse to acknowledge Joe Biden as the incoming President and are doing everything they can to question the validity of the U.S. Electoral process and the will of the people.
In this episode of #thespaceinbetween our podcast team discusses the Election and what comes next. Join us for #BidenOurTime

Calling all rock stars, instrumentalists and singer songwriters!
In this episode of the Space, called #passthejam, we discuss an idea, which would allow us to play new music on the show …a bit of a contest as it were. We are searching for new music for Season 3 of #Forwhatit’sworthwithblakemelnick and #thespaceinbetween.
As @CamBrown and I are both huge music fans, we have been continuously frustrated with current copyright laws, which prevent us from playing music on the show. Especially as our use of recorded music would only serve to promote the interest of artists and their music. The exponential growth of podcasts as an expressive broadcast medium has demonstrated the current copyright laws are woefully out of date and in need of reform.
However until the laws are changed, we have come up with a creative and solution which will allow us to introduce and promote new music and new artists to our audience on the show …. Please share this post and episode with any aspiring musician s you know and be sure to subscribe to #forwhatitsworthwithblakemelnick on your favourite podcast channel to find out more about “Pass the Jam” and to listen to the other exciting episodes we have scheduled in Season 2; “Comes a Time” with @hughsegal, Conservative champion for implementation of #universalbasicincome in Canada; “Fly Little Bird” with Darcy Van Poelgeest (@DVPdirect) author of the Eisner and Harvey Award winning book, #LittleBird, and “Love of the Game” with guest @TomScanlan, who has not only collected the hockey sticks of every 500 goal scorer in the NHL, but their stories as well …#forwhatitsworthwithblakemelnick and#thespaceinbetween
