Katie asks: How do you confidently talk about 3 job changes plus a lay off that I have experienced over the last 4 years? Not what I envisioned by all means having a 20 year career history in the same field. Additionally, I am in a fairly new job now and it is clear to me that it is a dead end so I am targeting companies I want to work for and plan on landing my final dream job. I am and have been successful in each role with numerous achievements.

Dear Liz, I took the leap and started a consulting firm in February and it’s going well. I’m paying my bills with my consulting income now. I’m very excited and I know it’s time to get business cards, launch a blog or website and take my business operations and branding up a notch. What title should I give myself? I expect to grow the business. I hope to grow my staff by early next year.

Dear Liz, I had a very good job that I had to give up when I moved to Minnesota for my wife’s job. We love it here but I have not been able to find anything close to my old job and I ended up taking a two-steps-down position. That isn’t terrible although the money is very substandard, but on top of the demotion in pay and job responsibilities, the workplace culture is also very bad. The managers in our office are not especially competent or awake and the staff is one step above surly.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could just tell people what to do and they’d do it? Wasn’t that what was supposed to happen when you finally got that promotion, or started that business? The thing is, your team are human beings—not machines. They are thinkers who thrive on solving problems. When people solve a problem themselves, plan a solution themselves, decide for themselves what to do next and next and next…they are engaged.
