Sometimes the simplest messages do us the most good. The latest case in point: a study by LinkedIn economist Guy Berger, identifying the soft skills most commonly associated with people getting hired. Eight of the 10 traits that he cites are so basic that you probably don’t even think of highlighting them in your resume, cover letter or interview. With all of the talk about what millennials value most in a job, it’s easy to wonder how much value a paycheck holds with young adults today. Turns out it doesn’t mean much, unless you’re the boss. A recent survey by Sokanu, a career discovery platform designed to help people find their ideal career, ranked a list of 150 careers based on feedback from 46,000 participants. On this ranked list, all the careers rating above a 3.

Worse, they made this discovery only after the publication had gone out to their subscribers. The situation was serious, but it wasn’t a full-fledged crisis — that is, until the head of publishing went into panic mode. To be fair, his intentions were good.
