Tech skills pay more. According to a labor-market analysis by Burning Glass Technologies, 78% of well-paying “middle-skill” positions call for basic proficiency with technology. But I get it: you have a full-time job, volunteering every other weekend, a puppy to train, plans with friends…you’re busy. You don’t have time to go back to school, or take three months off for an intensive certification program.

Depending on how far you’re going—crossing state lines or just heading a few cities over, going abroad or to the opposite coast—you’re going to want to be as organized as possible so you keep your sanity, along with your new job.

When a recruiter or hiring manager conducts a search on the vast LinkedIn user database, they’re not browsing LinkedIn for fun. They’ve got a position they’re trying to fill, or more than one. They’re all business! When they come across your LinkedIn profile in their searching, there are certain things they want to know about you right away. When they click through the search results page to view your full profile, you’ve got to be ready to fill them in.

We used to think that a strong manager was someone with a firm handshake and a commanding tone of voice. We used to think that being a strong manager meant being decisive and having all the answers. Now we know better! Strong managers bend and flex with their environments. They are strong enough to lead through trust instead of fear. They don’t need to bark out orders. They trust their team members. They are strong enough not to be right all the time and not to call the shots.

One of the biggest pitfalls for a job seeker is the natural tendency to slow down your job-search efforts when a particular job opportunity starts to look promising. Almost every job seeker falls victim to this mistake at least once. The minute it starts looking like you’re likely to get a job offer, you may let your job search activity drop off. You might start to rely on the job offer you’re expecting, figuring that it’s practically a sure thing.

Shutterstock If there’s one thing that managers have in common, it’s that they all hate surprises. So, if you’re about to spring something on your manager, be mindful of how you do it. Alert your boss to a problem early—while he or she can still do something about it—is always the right move. It’s never a good idea to dump your problems in your boss’s lap.

Dear Liz, I am a devoted follower of your columns and I enjoy reading your advice to job-seekers and working people. One thing that I notice is that you often advise people who are frustrated with their current working situation, particularly their relationship with their direct manager, to start looking for another job. Isn’t there any other way to deal with a bad boss apart from quitting? It seems that there should  be a way to deal with this and still be able to keep your job.
