Shutterstock Dear Liz, I am an avid reader of your columns. I try to keep my eyes open at work, and recently I’ve been more alert than usual because there are signs that the company is struggling. They are pretty big signs. They laid off a dozen people last summer. The mood in our office became very dark and somber and it hasn’t gotten better. They are still cutting expenses. We are not getting any pay increase this year and our health plan premiums just increased.

Shutterstock Dear Liz, I’m in a bad spot at work. Our manager Ellen left the company in February and we got a new manager, “Sam.” Sam worked in a different department before and we barely knew him. We had no opinion about him, either positive or negative. Sam has been in the company for two or three years. I’ve been here for nine years. When Sam first took on Ellen’s job my department-mates and I thought it might be okay. He knows the company inside and out.

It might be a friendly relationship, but it’s a business relationship, not a friendship. When we start our careers, wequicklylearn the unwritten rules of the workplace and integrate them into our thinking. We don’t speak about them, and that’s what makes so many professional relationships stilted.

Millennials have a reputation for ditching their nine-to-fives for entrepreneurship. But in terms of young people actually going out to start their own businesses, this perception is very different from reality. Why? According to a study by the Small Business Administration, in 2014, less than 2% of millennials were self-employed. This compares with 7.6% of Generation X and 8.3% of Baby Boomers.

U.S.-based organizations are budgeting $1.77M for cloud spending in 2017 compared to $1.30M for non-U.S. based organizations. 10% of enterprises with over 1,000 employees are projecting they will spend $10M or more on cloud computing apps and platforms throughout this year. Organizations are using multiple cloud models to meet their business’s needs, including private (62%), public (60%), and hybrid (26%).
