Years ago it was much easier to get a job than it is now. It was a straightforward process. You had one resume that you would send out in response to every job ad. You could only have one resume at a time back then because you had to type a whole new resume on a typewriter if you wanted to make one word change. When you could finally afford it you went to a print shop and got 100 copies of your resume delivered to you in a box.

Almost everyone has found himself or herself thinking at some point “Life is unfair. Why can’t I get a break?” It’s normal to feel that way. We only stop thinking and saying “Life is unfair!” when we realize that we control most of what happens to us in our lives. The minute we make any person, institution, or circumstance more powerful than we are, we lose.

A job search is a marathon, not a sprint. No matter how qualified and talented you are, a job search takes time. Recruiting processes aren’t high-speed endeavors. In fact, it is a red flag to pay attention to if you move through a recruiting pipeline too quickly. That is not a good sign about the legitimacy of the organization that is rushing you through its hiring process.

I went to speak at B-school networking event. At this event, local business owners and executives mingled with MBA candidates. A young woman introduced herself to me. She was the student organizer for the event. “Great job putting this event together!” I said. “I had the idea to make the huge name badges that you see on everyone’s chests,” she said. My name badge was about six by eight inches in size. Everybody else’s name badge was enormous, too.
