With millions out of work, it is not uncommon to be worried about the stability of your employment. Regardless of your industry expertise, your education, or experience, you can find yourself out of work. You could fall victim to a change in the economy, the whim of a lunatic boss (sound familiar?), or the obsolescence of your industry.

As college graduates burst out of the gates of their respective alma maters, polished and confident in their abilities, few are probably thinking ahead to a possible speed bump that sits in their paths. That stubborn obstacle would be the disconnect between the jobs they eventually secure and the skills they’ve learned thus far. The gap has always existed. Young people coming out of school cannot all be expected to immediately posses the hard skills organizations require.

Dear Liz, I am very confused about my work situation. My boss “Nina” tells me at least once a month how much she relies on me. She can see that I am very grateful for her praise, I guess, and I do appreciate her taking the time to thank me for my work. Maybe I am too needy for approval. Apart from Nina’s verbal thanks I get almost nothing from my job. Nina knows I am qualified to do more responsible work than I’m doing now.

LinkedIn has confirmed a significant breach from 2012 was worse than first thought, with the number of leaked usernames and passwords rising from 6.5 million to a purported 117 million. Earlier this week, fresh LinkedIn credentials went on sale on a dark web market known as The Real Deal. The same dealer, who goes by the name Peace, recently flogged millions of details on users of the Naughty America porn website at just $300.

Have you ever noticed that everywhere you look, in articles and advertisements and podcasts and news clips, entrepreneurs of any type are called courageous and daring? Every other minute somebody is saluting entrepreneurs for their courage and vision. Give me a break! Our species didn’t grow up walking into factories and office buildings every day to do our work. Just a few generations ago nearly everybody was an entrepreneur.

Whether accidental or intentional, your initial reaction to someone taking credit for your brilliant idea will be shock and dismay, followed immediately by righteous indignation. How dare they! First, take a few moments to calm down and assess the situation. You may need to excuse yourself to take a quick lap around the block, lock yourself in your office and call someone to vent, or meditate in a nearby restroom stall.

Summer break for college students has finally arrived. They have plans to spend time at the beach, lake, or music festivals. Relaxation is important, but they may not realize that there are hidden costs if they don’t use this time to complete an internship before they graduate. The costs are in the form of career potential, earnings, and time.

Fact: Occasionally working late, heading into the office on a Saturday and going above and beyond your job description is par for the course when you care about advancing your career. However, that doesn’t negate this other fact: You deserve to work for a company that values your personal life, understands the importance of flexibility and most of all believes spending time with your family matters. So, yes, you’ll work late one Friday night.
