Interested in a more flexible job? I’ve got some good news to share. According to Allison O’Kelly, CEO & founder of Corps Team, a Marietta, Ga.-based professional staffing firm with a focus on flexible work, “It’s a wonderful time for job seekers right now. They are demanding flexibility and getting it.” I heard O’Kelly offer that upbeat assessment at the premiere Make Work Fit Life conference last week in Stamford, Conn.

Women hold more executive and political positions than ever before. Heartening on the surface. But despite these gains, we’re still our own worst enemies when it comes to money. According to a recent report by the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, women who work full-time earn nearly $11,000 less per year than men, which adds up to almost half a million dollars over the course of a career. Women earn 79 percent of what a man earns. For younger women, the outlook is especially bleak.

According to a recent millennial leadership survey from The Hartford, 80% of millennials see themselves as leaders today. Yet only 12% of Gen Y held management roles in 2013; and less than a third of The Hartford’s sample reported that they’re currently business leaders. Maybe we’re entitled and delusional. Or maybe, explained millennial expert and author of Becoming the Boss, Lindsey Pollak, we have a progressive understanding of what it means to be a leader.

Shutterstock Email is a powerful business tool. We’ve become dependent on it for communicating with customers and coworkers, using it as a marketing tool and a customer service channel, and more. We can’t live without email, although there are some things we might like to change about it, such as spam messages, unintentional group emails, and so on. The reality is that even with all of its flaws, email makes sense.

It is ironic that employers take such care in making new hires, because they are taking a very small risk when they invite someone to join their team. Here in the U.S. an employer can terminate an employee for any reason or no reason at all, so if you should make a bad hire you can correct the problem quickly without much trouble. You take a much bigger risk when you join a new employer. The wrong job can destroy your mojo and your self-esteem.

Dear Liz, I have been working for nine years. The first seven years were fantastic. I worked at one job for four years and it was great, and then my boss left the company and invited me to  join him at his new firm, where I worked for three years. I only left that job because my fiance started medical school and I moved with him to our new city. I got a job pretty quickly at a publishing firm where I was Art Director. The job was fine for a year and a half.

One of the most important things a CEO can do to create a happy, healthy work environment is to choose and uphold employees who are kind, considerate team players. Dear Liz, I guess I have been somewhat in denial about the culture in my department. The company is okay but I am unlucky enough to work for the one manager nobody trusts. We’ll call him Sam. Sam has a posse of long-term employees who tell him what everybody is doing and not doing. It’s a grade-school environment in that respect. For instance, I had a short but powerful hallway conversation with our VP, Sam’s boss, last week. We’ll call the VP Bryan.
