Quotes from successful “sharks” like Mark Cuban and Robert Herjavec have become part of our everyday speech, and products that appear on the show enjoy instant brand recognition. It’s no wonder that everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.

Given the vast number of products and services available online, you might assume it would be easy for consumers to find exactly what they’re looking for. But while a vast selection does guarantee there’s “something for everyone”, being faced with too many options can actually make it more difficult for consumers to choose. Here’s an example. Let’s say you’re shopping for a new pair of headphones.

How would your computer respond if you looked frustrated or upset?  Could your phone comfort you if you were sad after getting a call?  Could your smart home adjust the music, lighting, or other aspects of the environment around you after you’ve had a bad day at work — without being asked? It may seem far-fetched, but computers that can read your emotions and have some level of “emotional intelligence” are not far off.

When I was hiring manager, I spoke with upwards of 30 to 40 candidates a week. Nearly every person I met with played it cool and avoided asking about time off, benefits or anything already explained in the job ad. They were smart and steered clear of the glaring red flags we’ve all been taught not to touch on during an interview.

We’ve written before about terribly untrue sayings and assumptions that people mistake for workplace wisdom. But, we have to admit, there’s one cliché mantra we do agree with that is universal. In our conversations with leaders, CEOs, and professionals in every industry across the globe, one phrase comes up again and again: “The one constant is change.” It’s true. Change is constant.
