Dear Liz, I am frustrated at work because the big, ambitious assignment my manager gave me when I was hired has been watered downso much it’s almost unrecognizable. I was hired a year ago and charged with turning around the company’s sales processes, territory assignments and sales comp plan. The CEO was excited about my arrival and introduced me to the entire management team at the company’s annual offsite. That seems like a million years ago.

Dear Liz, I am having a toughtime at work. I applied for a Team Supervisor job in August and in late September, I was appointed to the position. It has not been an easy transition. I’m really frustrated by my team of direct reports, who used to work for my old boss Phil before he was promoted to a new position in New York. Phil was my boss as well as theirs, and he was a great manager. Now Phil is gone and I’m in charge of his old team.

One of the best ways to increase employee engagement and retention is to improve an individual’s satisfaction with development opportunities in an organization. While looking at data my company Zenger Folkman has collected from more than 400,000 employees, I discovered that individual development opportunities was the third most significant driver of employee engagement.

Dear Liz, I haven’t job-hunted in five years, and now that I’m on the job market again I’ve been surprised at how cold and callous employers and their representatives can be. I’ve been involved in five interview pipelines so far. Two of them are still grinding along. None of the five employers has been especially easy to deal with. Two of them were such negative experiences that I took myself out of the running. I had no choice.
