It’s not only rude and unprofessional to treat job applicants badly, but it’s bad business, too. I wish Boards of Directors were up in the arms about the way their organizations destroy their brands by treating job-seekers badly. It’s a disgrace.

Shutterstock Career dissatisfaction is a malaise that affects a majority of the U.S. workforce. Less than half of American workers are satisfied with their jobs, and only 32% of employees are engaged. Even worse, 16% of millennials are actively disengaged, which means they are more or less out to do damage to their companies.

Shutterstock We have to be honest about the fact that fear is a major factor in many workplaces. We don’t act the same at work as we do in other places.  We don’t speak with the same voice, far too often. It is easy to spot the presence of fear in a workplace if you look for it. If your workplace is a healthy and trusting place, you can disagree with your manager.

Thousands of people over the years have shared with me that they dread networking and meet-and-greet events and experiences, and find it so “distasteful,” intimidating and inauthentic.

My firm  Zenger Folkman measures leadership effectiveness using a 360-degree feedback process in which 15 or so subordinates, peers, and the boss pool their perceptions of a leader. They complete an on-line assessment and the results are then passed onto the leader who was assessed.

And in your defense, that’s because you receive messages that require lengthy or thoughtful responses. Someone asked for your opinion, and you’d like to take the time to formulate it. Or there’s a five-page attachment for your review—and so you’ll need to review it.

Despite research consistently showing that companies with more diverse boards and workforces have stronger financial performance, there’s a strong divergence of thinking on the topic. A PwC study released yesterday finds that only 24% of male board members think having a racially and gender-diverse board improves company performance, compared with 89% of female board members.

We live in an age where you have just a few seconds to impress someone with your website, tagline, or bio. We have become masters at engineering the “perfect” profiles to hook others in and the right pitches to land the job or career advancements we want. If you can outperform your competition, or your business has 100,000 likes on Facebook, by today’s standards, you should feel accomplished. But the truth is, most of us are still starving for something more.

A life of regret is no life at all. Sure, we all have regrets for things we’ve done, mistakes made and opportunities lost. But if we make a conscious decision every day to minimize those regrets, we will lead a happier more fulfilling life. And hopefully those around us will as well. These sixteen ways to live a happier more fulfilling life come from my past and present experiences from getting it right, as well as getting it wrong. They are delivered in no particular order.
