Heading To The Next Meeting I can’t tell you how often I hear the same meeting challenges: no agenda, inconsistent scheduling, unclear roles and responsibilities, why is that person attending? The same problems continue because the same lackluster efforts to answer them continue as well. People often roll their eyes at the thought of a company meeting, quietly wondering to themselves, “how long will this meeting take? Because that’s time I’ll never get back.

Thomas Peterffy was born in the basement of a Budapest hospital on Sept. 30, 1944. His mother had been moved there because of a Soviet air raid. After the Soviets liberated Hungary from Nazi occupation, Hungary became a satellite state, laboring under a different kind of oppression: communism. Peterffy and his family, descended from nobles, lost everything. “We were basically prisoners there,” he says.

Shutterstock Since it only takes seconds for someone to decide if they like you, and research shows that first impressions are very difficult to change, the pressure that comes with meeting new people is justifiably intense. Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that being likable comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few—the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception.

This past month marked my 20th anniversary as a career coach. Over the years, I’ve seen many changes in the workplace: the growth of the gig economy, an increasingly diverse workforce, and a greater interest in semi-retirement jobs, to name a few. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is people’s interest in finding meaningful work. Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos gained $20 billion, more than anyone else in America. That was enough to boost his net worth to $67 billion, making him the second-richest person in the country, even wealthier than Warren Buffett, who finished in third place for the first time in 15 years.

Last October Trump was richer than ever. Real estate markets were surging and his net worth hit $4.5 billion, a personal high good for the 121st rank on The Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest people in America. Now, due to cooling property prices and new information about his holdings, Forbes pegs Trump’s fortune at $3.7 billion, down $800 million. He may not be able to have LinkedIn, but Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff isn’t hesitating to buy up a whole lot else. One day before its annual Dreamforce conference is set to begin in San Francisco, Salesforce announced it was acquiring Krux, a San Francisco company that provides a data management platform to help marketers. The Wall Street Journal first reported the agreement for the acquisition, which is now confirmed on Krux’s corporate website.
