So if you’ve toyed with the idea of starting a part-time business in retirement, you might have concluded: Nahhh. The reality about entrepreneurship, however, is largely a mirror image of the stereotype.

Shutterstock We tend to think that the most important career decisions we will ever have the opportunity or need to make are decisions like “Which industry should I join?” and “Should I take this job offer, or refuse it?” When big decisions like these examples present themselves, we have to act — and that juncture can be very stressful. We can feel like the whole world sits on the decision in front of us. We fear making the wrong move.

I don’t want to complain because I have a good job as a supervisor in a HRO (Human Resources Outsourcing) firm. I like my team and they seem to like me and things are good. However, I have one big issue slowing me down.

Because I’m self-employed, I create my days from scratch. But since I went out on my own, I’ve noticed something strange: rather than do only the essential each day, I often do a million things I don’t want and don’t need to do—at least not right then. I want to write. Instead I tweet. I need to finish a client project. Instead I email. The composite is complicated.

Shutterstock Dear Liz, I saw a job ad for my own job. I’ve been in my job for seven months. It’s never been great here but I thought my boss and I had reached an equilibrium. He wanted to hire an internal candidate for my job, I found out later, but the internal candidate left the company and my boss was stuck. He hired me. It’s not a perfect job for me in many ways but I do the job and I have a lot to show for my seven months of work.
