Dear Liz, I’m in a jam at work and I have no idea how to get out of it. I like my job in general but the hours are killing me. It’s my first salaried job. Just keeping up with my regular work takes me more than eight hours a day and then my boss gives me special projects on top of it. I get to work at seven-thirty a.m. and I never leave before 6:30 or 6:45 at night. To make it worse, my boss doesn’t appreciate the extra time I spend  in the office.

Up until very recently, computers needed a complicated and extremely precise set of instructions in order to accomplish even the simplest of tasks. Who among us remembers programming via punch cards? Or DOS? Computer programming languages have evolved over the years, but the biggest step has been moving towards the elimination of complicated programming.  In other words, teaching computers to learn for themselves, dubbed machine learning.

The Season 8 premiere of ABC’s wildly successful business reality show Shark Tank airs this Friday, Sept. 23. Over the past seven seasons, the entrepreneurs have significantly improved the investment pitches with proven track records of sales growth and patented products. A few of the presentations in the prior 2015/2016 season were the best in the show’s history.

You’ve made a positive contribution to every organization you’ve been a part of and your employment references fairly gush when talking you up. You push yourself hard and you usually see the results of it in your climb up the corporate ladder. Congratulations, you’re a high achiever, the kind of top-tier talent that every company wants, but few manage to snag.

One of the biggest obstacle for any manager is managing the force field around him or her, the one that keeps people from telling the manager the truth. It should be easy to tell the truth, for instance to say “Looks like the fixtures headed for that big store opening in St. Louis are held up in Nashville, and they’re going to arrive two or three days late.” It should be simple to deliver a message like that.

It is tough for most leaders to internalize the idea that as a leader, the buck stops with you. We tend to shy away from the great responsibility on our shoulders as leaders. The part of the job that entails telling people what to do and making most of the important decisions sits more easily on us. The hard part of the job to accept and step into is the part where everything that happens with the team is on you.

As a journalist who has covered the travel industry for many years, I’ve taken my share of business trips — the good, the bad, and the ugly. One of the ugliest was a trip to Chicago for a day of meetings. I opted for an 8 p.m. flight on an airline I don’t usually use so that I could work a full day at the office. Big mistake.  The flight was delayed until after midnight because of weather, then got rerouted to Rockford, Illinois.

Shutterstock Every part of the interview process can feel tenuous. For example: Here are a few thoughts I’ve had in the past, which I’m willing to bet have crossed your mind at some point, too. If I wear the wrong outfit to the first interview, I’ll get made fun of relentlessly. If I say something stupid during my final interview, the jig will be up—and nobody will ever hire me.

Back in 1979, white Americans earned an average hourly real wage of $19.62 compared to $16.07 for blacks, making for an 18.1 percent wage gap. While the gap narrowed in the late 1990s, it began to expand again in 2000. According to new research by the Economic Policy Institute, in 2015, the racial wage gap stood at 26.7 percent, with whites taking home an hourly real wage of $25.22 on average, compared to $18.49 for blacks.

Thought leadership helps you to become a leader and, more importantly, helps others to lead in their own lives. To inspire the lives of others, you have to be relevant.
