Well, turns out you’re not alone. Wasting time during the workday happens more often than most of us would like to admit. A recent survey conducted by Paychex.com asked 2,000 employees across a variety of industries about their tendencies to waste time at work.

Let’s say I’m facing the tail end of a massive project: I might tell myself that I needed the pick-me-up afforded by eating a bag of M&Ms. Or that I was “being productive” by organizing a desk drawer down to the last paperclip. While it is important not to generalize too much, millennials as a whole do possess characteristics and motivations that differ significantly from earlier generations in regards to the workplace. To get the best from their millennial employees, managers must understand this and adapt their management style accordingly.

First of all, there’s all the study of what Amy Cuddy calls “power poses.” The idea is to stand up straight, or to take up more space by putting your hands on your hips like Wonder Woman, or to smile broadly to indicate confidence.

When you do make mistakes, your best employees are the first to go, because they have the most options. If you can’t keep your best employees engaged, you can’t keep your best employees. While this should be common sense, it isn’t common enough.
