We are kicking off a series for the month of May honoring moms coming from different spaces, and I think that there are some pretty fierce women who also carry the title of mother that I want you to hear from.
So this is for my mamas.
I can't wait for you to hear the story from my friend, Kimi Wilson. She is a licensed doula and the CEO and founder of Love Your Journey Doula Services.
She has a passion for helping mamas as a military spouse and someone who actively served that community with so much heart and desire.
She is also a mother of a special needs son whom she loves and cares for and is deeply involved in that community.
She has a 19 year old, a nine year old and a six year old.
I hope that no matter where you are in your motherhood journey, you can take something from Kimi's experience and advice. Especially the advice to start taking care of yourself...first. Because at the end of the day, mamas, if we don't care for ourselves, we're gonna be left empty.
So it's important that you begin to care for you.
So tune in to Kimmy's wonderful words and encouraging spirit.

It is time.
It is time, ladies, for us to take responsibility and action and education to be empowered around our financial lives.
On today's episode of Thrive For[e]ward, we welcome Sophie Antal-Gilbert from Russell Investments.
She is someone I partner with on the business side of things as an educator and someone who shares her knowledge, not only around investments and tax planning but also around the topics of women and wealth. And that's where she and I roll up our sleeves, kick back our feet, and have a very down-to-earth conversation about being moms, caregivers, and why women should care so much about their finances. What are the pieces that we really should be taking charge of? If you've got girlfriends who need to start having this conversation, or you've never talked about money with before, send this podcast and initiate that conversation. I know you're going to take some nuggets of knowledge away today

If you had to pick from the topics of death, sex, and money, what would you feel most comfortable talking about?
The reality is most people will actually probably feel more comfortable with talking about sex than they do about money or death.
Two topics that are important for us to have conversations around and not just wait until there is a need that occurs for us to address the important topics around them.
Today, I am joined by a dear and wonderful friend of mine, Brenna Galvin. Brenna is an elder law attorney and a death doula, which we will explain in the episode. The reason I absolutely adore Brenna is because she leads with her heart.
So tune in as we start talking about the taboo topics of death and money, and also how to have those conversations.
How do you have those tough conversations with the loved ones you're responsible for? What are the basics to have those critical conversations and care for yourself and the ones around you.
Tune into this episode as Brenna and I make these difficult conversations a little bit easier for you to have.

Dr. Alex Melkumian founder of the Financial Psychology Center and a financial psychologist joins us on this week's episode of the Thrive For[e]ward to discuss how we build on having what sometimes feels uncomfortable - conversations about our finances.
When we talk about wealth and our financial lives it is critical that we build healthy communication. We can add strategy, build wealth, but if one person in a partnership or family has more control, absent of communication than that creates an unhealthy situation.
A whole new area of therapy is being created out of the need to sort through financial problems. Dr. Alex specializes in helping individuals and couples sort through money anxiety and come out the other side feeling good about their future.

Why is wealth so concentrated in one demographic?
Why does the industry-leading these individuals look exactly the same?
How do make this impactful and expedited change?
In all honesty, we can’t sit around and use the excuse of “It takes time.” Yes, of course, it will take time to implement but not to start. I often heard this phrase every time in my corporate setting I would ask when we would have more females and advisors of color. The reality is, I truly believe people still think this is a career for men or don’t understand the awesome part of our career that we get to influence and participate in.
Sometimes, you have to trailblaze a road for others. On today’s podcast, I’m joined with the CEO and Founder of CHIP Professionals as well as fellow LPL Advisor, Dana Wilson. We discuss our experiences of finding these seemingly hidden careers, the advantages, and struggles of being women in a white, male-dominated industry. Dana founded CHIP Professional as a resource outlet for clients to find advisors of color specifically focused on black and Latinx advisors across the country.
Why should you as the end investor care about the diversity of an industry? It’s like so many industries out there that are battling the inclusivity of their cultures and I believe, call me bias, that our industry has the power to influence beyond just those that work in it but those that partner with us.
So two gals in different experiences yet tied together with a common goal — Dana and I break down the following:

Whether it be through the increase in income, divorce, death of a partner or inheritance at some point women will be in more control of wealth in the US. Jayne Ellegard, our guest this week, and I have a similar passion for creating opportunities for empowerment and education around finances and wealth for women.
In fact, this week, Jayne is releasing her book Financial Empowerment for Women that is a true breakdown of approachable knowledge. We live in an industry that was built and designed for men including the language we use. I love how Jayne makes her content REAL and easy to understand.

We all have grief in different spaces of our lives and many other emotions as well. If we don’t process these and try to keep the buttoned-up picture of ourselves together, what does that really do for us?
Do you think those that cry are not strong? But those that always have a smile on their face must have it all together? That you are required to keep your different roles in your life separate and they aren’t allowed to intertwine?
Then pull up a chair, turn up the volume, and listen to my conversation with the author and I will proclaim her as a true-life grief guru Nora McInerny. Did she want this title?
No, who does, that doesn’t sound fun or sexy. However, when your husband dies of brain cancer when your son is two years old and then several months later you lose your dad as well, you start to have a crash course on grieving. Not to mention Nora is an accomplished author (you can buy her books via the link below - you won’t regret it!), podcast host of Terrible Thanks for Asking, co-founder of the Hot Young Widow’s Club, advocate for those going through the craptastic moments of life by supporting people with unrestricted grants via her social enterprise Still Kickin.

Have you ever tired to drive somewhere without knowing where you were or where you wanted to go? Probably wouldn't go too far. This is how I look about navigating through your financial plan with your purpose, values, and vision being the guard rails of where
you want to go. I utilize a strategy that I coined called Wealthcare which is the idea that money touches every aspect of our lives. Then when we surround our lives with our purpose, vision, values, and goals we can create a better picture of how we want each area of our life to work together and flex when we need to.
When I speak with many of you, your values and vision truly encompass making a difference in your life, the lives of your family, and the community that surrounds you.
LET'S MAKE RIPPLES TOGETHER
Our guest today on the podcast, Brandi Voth social entrepreneur and tidal wavemaker joins use to discuss a few key pieces about making an impact in our lives and our communities. Our conversation comes close to a one-year timeframe of COVID-19 hitting the US and the shutdown starting. Brandi shares with us, very vulnerably, how these past twelve months have impacted her and why she chose never to give up.

Carpe Diem the Latin phrase that means seize the day. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in this space of seizing the day every time you put your feet on the floor after getting out of bed in the morning?
Or can you think of a moment that sprung you into action?
Just a few days ago we rounded the one-year mark, in Minnesota, from the first lock-down experience due to COVID-19.
The past twelve rolling months have provided us with many different experiences. We are actively awakening to multiple pandemics around us - not just of health but also race and mental health.
Perhaps, we spent time at the beginning of this experience reflecting and growing - how have you continued to allow that to be a part of your routine?
How have you, as Jasmine Stringer will discuss on this episode, looked in the rearview mirror - not a space of shame but rather reflecting on accomplishments and how you want to choose to live every day.
Jasmine shares with us how it’s not really the big things it’s the choices that we make every day. In fact, her book “Seize Your Life - How to Carpe Diem Every Day” is a perfect daily read and reminder of how we change our mindset to own that.
Jasmine and I talk about stepping into our true selves whether it’s through a life transition we have experience or finally decided to live our lives to the fullest.
Here are a few big take-a-ways that I had from Jasmine and I’s conversation:
1. Seizing the day doesn’t have to be big and grandiose.
2. Getting clear on your vision is a process and commitment - your why sustains you!
3. Lifestyle changes are what takes your why to the next level.
What is your why? Are you ready to create the building block to living the life you want?

2020 brought the topic of equal pay to light even more than it had been. When households had to make the difficult decision to have someone stay home with the children who were no longer in school or did not have the ability to fund care providers to supplement education — they were put in a position of answering the question “Who makes more money?” Due to the wage gap, many women were the ones then having to leave their full-time jobs to stay home and care for their children.
The topic of caregiving no matter for children or others in our lives is one that usually lands on the shoulders of women. According to caregivers.org 75% of caregivers in the United States are female, this is usually a task that happens later in life, or at least most think that is the case. However, personally, I was 30 when my father was diagnosed with early-onset dementia and we had to begin a caregiving plan for him. This event happened right after the birth of my second child. My mother is his main caregiver however, I have to step in with the strategy and resources many times because this can be a very overwhelming topic for her and many no matter how strong you are.
You might be saying okay Shannon how does this all play into International Women’s Day and equal pay? Well when we think about the bigger picture and the design of the work force it usually is not designed for flexibility, even when we needed it most in 2020. So, how do we challenge the systems that are in place now, create opportunities for planning and communication, so we don’t continue this cycle for generations to come? Well, my thoughts are addressed in this episode of the Thrive For[e]ward podcast.
A few key pieces that we will cover in this episode:
Tune into the latest episode to continue the #choosetochallenge theme for International Women’s Day 2021. Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss out on any episode we are continuing with our them of women’s empowerment with all of our guests for March!
