Call us The Joke Ridge Boys for this episode, as Formidable Opponents explore previously uncharted territories and we've gone country.  We explored the pop country explosion of the 90s replete with the artists, sounds and bulk striped shirts that made the era a memorable one.  If your show heifer won grand champion at the local livestock show, heck, even if it didn't, we invite you to tune in to this episode and take a look back at the decade that brought us Shania Twain (and those other guys with hats and mullets who sold a ridiculous amounts of records but mainly Shania Twain).

After a long break, we wish we could go back.  No, not to the holidays but back to a simpler time.  Yes, we are talking 90s music this episode.  What better way to jump into 2023 than to debate these golden classics (ouch) and have a few laughs while doing it?  So, whether you understood every lyric to Yellow Ledbetter (liar), or you like your music with a side of melancholy, or even smidge of hee-hawing, we promise you'll enjoy this episode of "Formidable Opponents."

Acclaim though important when shared can be invaluable for some when the recognition rests solely on one individual's talent alone.  A star leaving a band to set out to make a name for him or herself is an all-too common tale.  Often times, the impetus of a band's demise occurs when hubris takes precedence (Or, believe in one's self and abilities, if you're into that kind of stuff).  This week on Formidable Opponents, we spend 78 minutes trying to name members of The Commodores outside of Lionel Ritchie without Googling.  Join us for a fun discussion as we talk and debate "Best Musical Artist That Went Solo."   Oh, and on a side note, if ever given a chance to go back and do a one line solo for "We Are The World," rest assured each one of us would drop the other two like a bad habit.

Thanksgiving is a time to share, reflect and gather.  If you grew up like us, it was also a time for unintentional family comedy and inexplicable Country Crock tubs full of stuffing.  This week on Formidable Opponents, we give thanks to the memories, the food, time spent family and for our main entrée we rank and debate best Thanksgiving sides.

The movies of Kevin Smith have had a huge impact on us spanning the past four decades.  Smith's intelligent philosophy, random musings, pop culture dialogue and quick  humor has been a huge inspiration for us and we now get to show our appreciation for someone who introduced us to Snowba...er, um, talents like Jason Lee and Jason Mewes (among countless others).  Kevin Smith grew up on the comedies and comedians we grew up with and loved, he understood his audience because he was (and still is) us.  This week Formidable Opponents discusses "Best Kevin Smith Scene."  Don't hesitate to listen to our previous 69 episodes...in a row.

Stone Temple Pilots is a band we've always been fascinated by.  Their consistency, catalog and talent help to carry the rock scene when grunge was fading out and rock was left trying to find an identity.  STP had their ups and downs as a band but they hold a special place in our hearts for the memories, albums and the great live shows we got to witness.  Join us this week as we peel back the layers on a group that was more than a grunge band, a criminally underrated collection of talented artists that we still love to listen to to this day.   STP belongs in Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame!  Listen to this week's episode of Formidable Opponents to find out why.

We all know that there are certain songs we can only tolerate for a season  (If you listen to Mariah's "All I Want for Christmas" outside it's requisite November-December confines, well, first of, why?  Secondly,  maybe don't).  Halloween is also a big music themed holiday.  We may not directly connect many of these tunes to Halloween but they've grown to perfectly match the spirit of the holiday.  Most deliberately, some inadvertently, which makes this such a fascinating music topic due to the listener's interpretation of what makes for a good Halloween song.   Here at Formidable Opponents, we wrap up our Halloween themed episodes by talking music, and horror.  Join us this week as we debate, "Best Halloween Song."
