Forward Church

The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is an important doctrine of the Christian church, and belief in it is essential for Christians. The supernatural nature of the virgin birth highlights the fact that humanity cannot reach redemption on its own. Our salvation from sin can only come through the intervention of God himself.

Luke 2 is the narrative about Christmas but Philippians 2 is “the story behind the story!”  Jesus came as a humble baby in the manger but He was the Son of God incarnate! As such He was able to bear our sins on the cross and conquer death on Easter morning.

The Scriptures record that when the wise men arrived where Jesus was, they had brought three types of gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Each of these gifts has a symbolic meaning attached to it which gives us insight into who Jesus is: our ultimate Prophet, Priest, and King. Through this message and our looking at gifts, we want to reframe how we look at gifts so that every single time you either get a gift or give a gift, you would think of the greatest gift that God gave us, which is, namely, his son, Jesus Christ, who saved us from our sin, and that gift should humble us. So, if we get this, this is why we must listen to this message, and if we don’t ignore it, we can become people like Christ, humble people who become pleasant people who become giving people.

Throughout Scripture, there are signs that point to Jesus as the Christ. In preparation for Christmas, this series will explore four such signs: the star of Bethlehem, the manger and swaddling clothes, the gifts of the magi, and the virgin birth. The sign of Christ’s birth, the star, was foretold centuries before by a gentile, and it led the first gentiles to the young Jesus. In what ways are you following the signs and directions given to you by God?

This three-week series entitled, A Generous Life: The Beauty In Giving, takes an uplifting look at the topic of giving, showing the blessing to be found in a consciously generous life, one which imitates the generosity of God himself. Biblical generosity seeks to please God rather than seeking human reward or acclaim. A giving life is one that does not compare giftedness or resource with others; it is giving God your all, not somebody else’s, knowing that he sees what you have and will reward you at the resurrection.

You are saved to serve. In this passage, Paul encourages his readers to continue to grow in their character (vv. 1–3), in their gifts (vv. 11–12), in their knowledge of the truth (vv. 13–15), and in their love for one another (vv. 2, 15–16). Paul mentions gifts as given by the grace of God and reminds us that their purpose is to prepare God’s people to serve (vv. 7, 11–12). Yet he tells his readers to be sure to grow in their character, instructing them to walk in humility, gentleness, peace, and love (vv. 1–3). We tend to place a lot of attention on our gifts and talents, but our character deserves the most attention. When our character is ready, God will give us the grace for our gifts to grow.

We forgive the inexcusable done to us because God in Christ has forgiven the inexcusable done by us. How many of us have felt the pain of strained relationships, conflicts in relationships, the disintegration of relationships, and deep down inside, all we ever actually wanted was peace and reconciliation? Christ formed in us, is the salve for that wound, a solution to the pain we feel. Forgiveness is hard. Reconciliation is hard. But we as Christians do hard things. Because we have a loving God who has equipped us for good works, therefore we walk in them. That's the whole point of us being a masterpiece in progress.
