The Garvin Gate Blues Festival got its start in 1988 at the old Rudyard Kipling. Today this event is the largest free neighborhood street music festival in Louisville and takes place the second full-weekend in October at The Gate on Garvin Place and Oak Streets in historic Old Louisville, just a mile south of downtown. The festival attracts a very diverse audience from all over the Midwest, making it one of the largest and most recognized free blues music festivals in the U.S. Countless legendary blues musicians have performed at the Garvin Gate Blues Festival throughout the years, they help to keep Louisville's blues heritage alive. Louisville played a role in the Great Migration from the South after World War II, but it was during urban renewal when we lost a lot of our urban blues culture. The festival is run entirely by volunteers with proceeds from sponsorships and vendor sales benefiting The Garvin Gate Neighborhood Association, the historic Old Louisville preservation district neighborhood, the Kentuckiana Blues Society and different charities chosen each year.

Many book lovers could spend hours in a library wandering around perusing the shelves, but the Willard Library in Evansville, Indiana is a little more unique because it houses not only books and magazines but some spooky residents. In the 1930s, staff members and patrons first started seeing apparitions including a woman in Victorian clothing named The Gray Lady, a gentleman named Frank, and a little boy named Billy Bobby who likes to play on the stairs. These are friendly ghosts and each year the Willard conducts free ghost tours to the public. You can also keep track of the ghosts for yourself through their ghost cams that they have set up in various locations through the library.

This week we speak to Stacie Dotson, a staff member at the Willard Library who is considered their ghost guru. She is a lover of the paranormal and in fact has a fairly unique background herself which makes her perfect for this job. Stacie has had several encounters with the ghostly residents and she fills us in.

Helen Prejean is the author of three books, River of Fire, The Death of Innocence and Dead Man Walking. These books are about Helen’s compassionate support of men as they prepared for their execution by the state of Louisianan. We’re talking about The Counterrevolution of 1776 by Gerald Horn.

This books takes the position--and compellingly argues--that the American revolution was really a counterrevolution because a revolution is from the ground up. A revolution of the people, by the people and for the people. But when you look into it, the American Revolution was not by and for the average people of the colonies. It was by and for the oligarchs.

There was a movement in England to abolish slavery at a time when many powerful colonists wanted to keep their slaves. And the British crown was preventing the colonists from crossing the Appalachian mountains when many of the colonists wanted to cross the mountains and lay claim to the land at the expense of the indigenous populations.

But why are we talking about early American history on the climate report?

It’s because solving the problem of climate change is a collective effort, a political movement, that will only succeed if we properly understand our history.

And our history is not to be confused with the mythology that we learned in school.

Rachel Roarx, Democratic Candidate for KY State Representative, District 38, answered questions posed by the Louisville League of Women Voters as well as audience questions at a Candidate Forum, held 9/29/22 at the Iroquois Public Library. (Her Republican opponent didn't show up.) In addition, Ruth Newman and Victoria Strange, co-hosts of Election Connection, discussed the Democratic candidates, Morgan McGarvey, and his Republican opponent, Stuart Ray, both running for U.S. House of Representatives from the 3rd Congressional District to replace long-time Democrat Representative John Yarmuth.

Scott Miller fills us in on what to see in the night sky this month. Then, Rob Weber interviews Rebecca Piche (Asbury College) about her research on using eDNA (environmental DNA) in monitoring semi-aquatic salamanders. Finally, Austin Minton (Kentucky Wesleyan College) discusses his search for bacterial strains that produce antibiotics.

Get your hands dirty with us on this week’s show as your host, Justin Mog, sits down for a chat with Jane Evans (Program Director), and Amelia Baylon (Urban Agriculture Sustainability Coordinator) from Common Earth Gardens at Catholic Charities of Louisville (https://cclou.org/common-earth-gardens/). The project works with refugees to increase land access, grow food for families, and prepare for the market.

Common Earth Gardens was formerly the Refugee Agriculture Partnership Program (RAPP), which was started in 2007 by Lauren Goldberg and Stephen Bartlett within the Kentucky Office for Refugees (KOR). The first sites established for refugee agriculture were the 7th Street Community Garden and the Southside Community Garden. In 2014, the RAPP program moved to be a program of Catholic Charities of Louisville and supported the establishment of Maplewood Apartments Garden, Francis Center Garden, St. Ignatius Community Garden and Bethany United Garden. Currently, Common Earth Gardens supports six sites.

This fall 2022 and spring 2023, Common Earth Gardens will be planting pollinator gardens at the urban agricultural sites around Louisville. This is one of the many efforts they are implementing to increase conservation practices on farmed land here in Louisville! They need volunteers for the plantings, but there are other roles, such as designing and maintaining the garden where volunteers are welcome.

Come out and help Common Earth Gardens plant pollinator friendly gardens! Your support will contribute to housing, feeding, and the protection of pollinators that are vital to our food system and environmental health.

    Wear shoes and clothes that you do not mind getting dirty

    Volunteer duties include: sod and weed removal, tilling soil, creating walking paths, laying down landscaping fabric, scattering, planting seeds, flower plugs and shrubs, mulching, watering.
