On this special Thanksgiving edition of Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, steps away from the Fry Daddy for another chat with Todd Bluechel. You last heard Todd on this program talking about his work with Collective Sun to bring solar power to non-profits. Now he's working with a family-owned, locally run business called Oil-Tech to take the hassle out of vegetable oil disposal, cleaning grease traps and waste water disposal. This Thanksgiving, Todd will be frying a turkey for the first time and it got him thinking about the city-wide problem of families not having a way to properly dispose of and recycle used cooking oil. He estimates that in Louisville this Thanksgiving there will be some 120,000-600,000 gallons of used oil generated.

This holiday season, Oil-Tech is teaming up with their clients to offer free drop off locations around the city for families to bring their used oil. Simply call Oil-Tech at 502-424-1654, tell them your general location and they will tell you where to drop off your waste cooking oil.

Close to 100 times President Trump has referred to the Mueller investigation as a "witch hunt" or a "rigged witch hunt". Few metaphors are more commonly used in public and political life than this highly charged attack on investigations, oversight, and inquisitions -- some of which, no doubt, are indeed scurrilous, while others are legitimate law enforcement activity. How do we tell the difference in real time? And more fundamentally, why is this image of the witch hunt so powerful? What exactly does it mean? And how have authors -- from Arthur Miller under McCarthyism to Booker T. Washington under Jim Crow -- challenged oppression without coming right out and naming it?

Faculty scholars write literally thousands upon thousands of articles on ethics in medicine, in business, in engineering, in agriculture. But virtually nothing on the ethics of their own institution, the university. How strange is that? Fr. James Keenan, Canisius Professor of Theology at Boston College, argues that ethicists must turn their gaze on themselves and their own institution, and help theorize and build a culture of ethics on campus.

On this week’s edition of the Access Hour, we take you back to November 5, 2018 when Cassia Herron, faculty in Environmental Studies at Bellarmine University, spoke on “How Research and Politics have Shaped Louisville’s Food System.” Cassia Herron is a leader in Kentucky’s local food movement and as a community organizer, urban planner, writer, community development consultant and social justice warrior has extensive experience working to improve urban and rural communities in Kentucky. Through the lens of racial justice, equity and community wealth creation, Herron spends her time holding accountable public sector officials, challenging philanthropic and private investors and inspiring her fellow citizens to envision and create a new economy in Kentucky based on cooperation and equity. She currently teaches a new course at Bellarmine in Environmental Studies – Urban Food Systems – and is a contributing writer for the LEO Weekly. Herron is a graduate of the University of Louisville and has a Masters of Urban Planning from the University of Michigan.

Carolyn teaches Environmental Science at Bellarmine University, where she is currently pursuing a PhD. But she also does environmental education work out in the community in a variety of settings with kids and adults. On today’s show, we’ll hear about how Carolyn hopes to use participatory research as a means to address environmental issues and increase participation of underrepresented groups in democratic process through a study she is piloting this semester with Dr. Kristin Cook at Bellarmine. Carolyn also seeks ways of providing meaningful roles for youth to contribute to communities through environmental education - another study she has in the design phase with Dr. Patrick Englert. We’ll also hear about her work with the Children at Play Network as a Free Play Facilitator under the leadership of Claude Stephens and Melissa Rue and Bernheim Arboretum. At Project Warm, Carolyn facilitates Energy Management Workshops for people who have an interest in reducing costs through energy conservation; and with Trees Louisville she provided a series of trainings to their summer interns related to canopy coverage, and urban forest succession. Last summer, at the Lincoln Foundation's Math and Science Camp, Carolyn taught team building skills, pollinator observations, and more on UofL's campus.

Beyond her work as an educator, Carolyn is a citizen scientist collecting data as a volunteer for four citizen science projects, all of which are open to participation by anyone in the community:
