  • Sustainability Now! | Chris Glasser | Streets For People | 2024 Advocay Agenda | 2-5-24
    On this week’s program, your host, Justin Mog, parks his bike for a chat with Chris Glasser from Streets for People (S4P) about their 2024 Advocacy Agenda. S4P is calling for $5 million in funding for traffic calming programs and for revisions to the city's inequitable street safety policies. They are proposing solutions that will invest in neighborhood-level traffic calming, the beautification and walkability of our commercial corridors, and improving access to city parks. S4P believes this is an agenda that everyone in the city can support -- urban or suburban, Democrat or Republican, young or old, East, West or South. Learn more at https://www.streetsforpeople.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2024-Advocacy-Agenda.pdf
    Tune in for an update on impending two-way conversions of oppressive one-way roads in our urban core, including Logan & Shelby; and 2nd & 3rd Streets. We also have an in-depth conversation about the future of TARC. This week we talk to the father-daughter team of Marty Ohlhaut and Grace Ly. They have written a travel memoir called Tent for Seven: A Camping Adventure Gone South Out West.
    This book is based on the true story of their family camping trip to the Canadian Rockies which went horribly wrong in the 1990s. Marty, his wife Jolene, and their 5 children flew from Charlotte NC to the Pacific Northwest and then drove a van to several spots in the majestic Canadian mountains. They camped in their family tent, lovingly referred to as Big Blue. While there, so many things went awry but most importantly, Jolene was severely injured and had to be taken to a hospital where she spent many days. The Ohlhaut family was in disarray but Good Samaritans named the Walshes came to the rescue.
    This family is genetically predisposed to adventure. You will hear Marty talk about some wild things he has seen and done, and even though Grace doesn’t doesn’t mention it, she also is an adventure seeker. She dog sleds in Finland and rock climbs in Colorado. Carrie and I are so boring in comparison.

  • Sustainability Now! | Sumedha Rao & Gianna Bennett | Regional Climate Action Planning | 1-29-24
    On this week’s program, we’re talking Regional Climate Action Planning with Sumedha Rao and Gianna Bennett from the Metro Louisville Mayor's Office of Sustainability (http://louisvilleky.gov/sustainability). The Office of Sustainability is currently conducting a Regional Climate Action Plan Survey to collect information on residents’ climate and sustainability priorities. This work is funded by an EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, and residents within our Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) can participate in the survey. That includes the following 11 counties: In Kentucky: Louisville/Jefferson County, Bullitt County, Oldham County, Shelby County, Spencer County, Henry County, and Trimble County; In Indiana: Clark County, Floyd County, Harrison County, and Washington County.
    Responses before January 31 are eligible to enter a raffle and win some sustainable swag! Take the survey now at https://louisville.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dmYa3jp8EKAZU3A
    This work is funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Pollution Reduction Grant and will be used by the Office to update and improve Louisville’s climate action plans. Louisville Metro Government has received a grant from the EPA to create an updated Climate Action Plan for the region. This work builds on past and ongoing community-engaged efforts, including the Louisville Metro Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan and similar plans from other regions. It is also in support of the priorities outlined in A Path Forward for Louisville (https://apathforward4lou.org/).
    This Climate Action Plan aims to reduce emissions and position this region for larger EPA grants. The goals are to:
    1. Implement actions to reduce major greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and beyond;
    2. Pursue actions to achieve community benefits in low-income areas and areas that experience most environmental harms;
    3. Pursue effective policies and programs that can be “scaled up” across other areas and initiatives.
    This 5-10 minute survey will tell us what work we should prioritize.
    As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW!
