  • Access Hour | 8-23-23 REAL Good News | Geothermal Energy | 1-3-24
Geothermal energy offers a major solution to a clean power future by using power from under the ground. In some cases geothermal comes from hundreds of feet below the surface, in other cases it's just a few feet, and might already be powering you or your neighbor’s home. Today’s show explores several different aspects of geothermal to help you understand its role in green energy for the world, and for right here in Louisville.
This show was recorded on August 23, 2023, as part of a quarterly series of "REAL Good News" virtual events hosted by the Renewable Energy Alliance of Louisville (REAL). These events have been held since 2020, with the purpose of providing information to encourage Louisville’s Metro Council to implement the resolution it passed in 2020, calling for our city to be using 100% clean energy by 2040. This show includes a presentation from the Louisville airport on its massive and innovative geothermal project; another local expert explaining all the different forms of geothermal, including how you can use it in your home; and the perspective of a member of the Louisville Metro Council. You can get more information on these programs at http://renewableenergylouisville.org.
The Access Hour airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Wednesday at 2pm and repeats Thursdays at 11am and Fridays at 1pm. Find us at http://forwardradio.org

  • Sustainability Now! | Trey Kay | Reporting on the Culture Wars | 1-1-24
To kickoff the new year on Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, shares with you one of his favorite moments from the Grassroots Radio Conference that Forward Radio participated in October 20-22, 2023 in Charleston, WV. A major highlight was the keynote address given by Trey Kay, creator of the Us and Them podcast, which is produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and PRX. For years, he’s reported on culture war battles in America. In 2009, he and Deborah George produced the radio documentary “The Great Textbook War,” which was honored with Peabody, Murrow, and duPont-Columbia Awards. In 2013, he produced “The Long Game: Texas’ Ongoing Battle for the Direction of the Classroom,” which he researched as a Spencer Fellow for Education Reporting at the Columbia School of Journalism. In 2005, he shared in another Peabody for his contribution to Studio 360’s “American Icons: Moby Dick.” He’s produced for This American Life, The New Yorker Radio Hour, Marketplace, American RadioWorks, Morning Edition, Inside Appalachia and PBS Frontline. Kay has taught at the Columbia School of Journalism, Marist College and at the State University of New York at New Paltz. He splits his time living in New York’s Hudson Valley and the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia.

  • Sustainability Now! | Gloria & David Mog | Elders Climate Action & Third Act | 12-25-23
On this week’s special Holiday edition of Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, gathers around the microphones with his parents, Gloria & David Mog for a conversation about the work they are doing in their 80s to address the climate crisis! Listen in and learn about the Rocking Chair Rebellion with Elders Climate Action (http://eldersclimateaction.org) and the surge in interest in Bill McKibben’s new organization for seniors called Third Act (http://thirdact.org). Gloria is getting increasingly interested in the climate-clout potential of elders and recommends a new book by Lawrence McDonald, a DC-area Third Act member, called “Are We Too Old To Save the Planet?”
Get inspired by the work of people in their “third act” of life, as we explore the growing awareness of the close connection between democracy and climate issues, social justice and climate, and intergenerational cooperation and climate. We also discuss some potential solutions to the crisis, including a conversation about the future of nuclear energy. For more information about small-scale nuclear power, check out the work of Jeff Navin at TerraPower at https://www.terrapower.com/people/jeff-navin/
And you can make taking political action on climate part of your daily routine with the Climate Action Now app at https://www.climateactionnow.com/

For our final episode of 2023, we chat with Anna Pitoniak, whose 4th novel, The Helsinki Affair, has been named a Best Thriller of 2023 by The Washington Post. Anna has long been a fan of spy novels and decided to try her hand at writing the genre. While spy novels have usually been written by and about men, Anna shows that women agents can be just as smart, sly, and ballsy. With a background in the publishing industry, Anna discusses how this experience impacted her journey writing, finding an agent, and working to get her novel into the world.
We also discuss how she is very different from Carrie on the Christmas front and why tacos were not her favorite food from a trip to Mexico (you’ll be surprised by what was.)
