  • Bench Talk | Eight Science Stories (might not be suitable for children) | Dec. 18, 2023
This week we bring you eight fascinating science stories! Since some of them involve sexual anatomy or behavior, this episode might not be appropriate for children. We discuss the sexual anatomy of female snakes, the benefits of sperm cells swimming in clusters, how to put babies to sleep, the observation that men age faster than women at the DNA level, the factors affecting people's directional abilities, the virus behind multiple sclerosis, how the Milky Way might have created our continents, and evidence for widespread male homosexuality in Rhesus Macaques. That's a lot of territory!
‘Bench Talk: The Week in Science’ is a weekly program that airs on WFMP Louisville FORward Radio 106.5 FM (forwardradio.org) every Monday at 7:30 pm, Tuesday at 11:30 am, and Wednesday at 7:30 am.

  • Sustainability Now! | Lindsay Duncan & Ellen Trahan | Winter Solstice | 12-18-23
On this week’s Sustainability Now!, we celebrate the spirit of the season and the longest night of the year with a Winter Solstice show! Your host, Justin Mog, gathers around the bonfire with Lindsay Duncan, Corporate Partners Manager at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (http://bernheim.org) and Ellen Trahan, Chair of the Board of Directors at the Louisville Sustainability Council (http://louisvillesustainabilitycouncil.org). Tune in to reclaim the night as we celebrate the value of darkness, inwardness, peace and quiet. As Lindsay puts it, “When we focus on the natural world and less on the chaos of the holidays, the season becomes more sustainable naturally! Decor becomes more natural/sustainable. We drive less. We enjoy the warmth of a fire. We buy less. CARPE NOCTEM - Seize the night! There is beauty in the winter darkness. Let’s celebrate it.”
The Winter Solstice is also the perfect time to remember the importance of dark sky conservation for not only appreciating astronomical phenomena, but also for the very survival of many creatures that migrate, hunt, and forage during the night!
In addition, we’ll share some of our favorite tips for making the holidays more sustainable, as we reflect a bit on the past year and what we’re looking forward to in 2024!

You can find out more about Kelcey Ervick on her website https://kelceyervick.com
This week we chat with Kelcey Ervick whose graphic memoir The Keeper: Soccer, Me, and the Law That Changed Women’s Lives I (Amy) discovered after our friend and former guest, Bethany, told us about what a great book it was.
Kelcey is the author of four books but The Keeper is her first foray into a full graphic experience. She weaves her own personal story of being a high school and Division I college soccer player with the history and effect Title IX has had on women in all areas of their lives, not just in sports. If you loved the feminist bent of the movie Barbie, this book will give you similar vibes.
The Keeper has been recommended by the NYT Book Review, Publisher’s Weekly, School Library Journal, and was the winner of the state literary prize of Ohio, the Ohioana Book Award, which has been awarded to other notable authors including Celeste NG, Ross Gay, and John Scalzi. Even if you aren’t a sports fan (and I am not), you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Remember, that in Season 10, Amy has a new project which is to give listeners book recommendations. If you’re looking for a book set in Romania, or a book about rabbits, or a book about changelings, or anything in between, send us a message and we’ll recommend a similar read you can add to your nightstand.
