Tonight’s guest is Rosearl Julian West- the author of Reflections- My Journey on Arunah. I really enjoyed this book – it is the story of her life from childhood to early adulthood, growing up in her family’s home on Arunah Ave in West Baltimore from the 1950s until the 1970s and how the historical, social, and political events of the time shaped her life experiences. She also shared some interesting stories of her time working at Baltimore radio Stations WFBR and WBAL.

Tom Pless was an electronics teacher at Dundalk High School and in 1982 started 97 Underground with a group of his students as the "school radio station".  What started out as a 10 watt station that only aired at night and on weekends became a legendary Baltimore radio station, Baltimore's home of heavy metal. They were the first to play bands such as Metallica and Guns and Roses, and were very supportive of the local music scene, giving local bands an opportunity to get their material played, get interviewed, and have their shows announced on the air. They sponsored countless concerts and events over the years and in 1987 released the 97 Underground album "The Beast from the East Vol 1" which featured all Maryland based bands.  In recent years, 97 Underground has made a comeback as an internet station- 97 Underground.com- Pure Rock Worldwide.
Their website, where you can listen live, see their playlists, read bios of their on the air personalities, buy merchandise, and more is www.97underground.com

I recently reconnected with singer songwriter Dan Houtz! Dan and I go back a long time; we met each other performing in coffee shops around the area in the early to mid 2000s. We had a great time talking about those days as well as what he is up to now- his bands, solo material, and a favorite cause of his- Band Together- which raises money for children in Harford County schools to have instruments for music education. All of his links can be found here:

Over July 4th weekend I reconnected with two of my old bandmates, Fritz Fell and Shawn Ziegler. It's always great to see those guys, and Fritz gave me a cassette of Orangeseed Parade's interview on 97 Underground with Crysta Kyle from January 26, 1991. What a blast from the past! I also spent a good part of this episode reminiscing about bands, band members, clubs, and other memories of performing in the Baltimore-DC-Virginia circuit back in the 1980s-90s. Truly a magical time!!!

The Fowl Players of Perryville will be performing on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on August 5, September 2, October 7 and 28. For more information please see www.wmsr.com and www.fowlplayersofperryville.com.

We also discussed the classes she teaches and her “Mortified”shows. Information on all of these things, including how to purchase “Shimmer” can be found at www.alexandrahewett.com.
