There are no pensions on a dead planet.
This Sunday thousands of athletes ran the Dublin Marathon, sponsored by Irish Life- Ireland’s leading pension provider. But the night before, Extinction Rebellion Ireland rebels took to the streets to remind Irish Life of this message: There are no pensions on a dead planet.
The science is clear: if we want to have any chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change we need to urgently phase out our use of fossil fuels, yet billions of euros of Irish workers’ pensions with companies like Irish Life are invested in fossil fuel companies.
Fossil fuels are the main source of greenhouse gas emissions causing climate breakdown. To prevent catastrophe, 60% of the world’s fossil fuels that have already been discovered need to be kept in the ground. We can do that by taking back the power from the fossil fuel industry, by de-funding it. For Irish Life that means divesting funds from fossil fuels.
Irish Life and the pension funds industry as a whole can and must do better for all our sakes - including our kids and future generations.
