If internet rumblings are to be believed, the smoke surrounding Lane Kiffin and Auburn is nearing a fire.
What we do actually know, though? If nothing else, as the Ole Miss Spirit was hearing on Monday, Kiffin is certainly a leading candidate. Auburn appears focused on four: Kiffin, Hugh Freeze, Matt Rhule and Joe Whitt, Jr.
Ben Garrett and David Johnson try to separate fact from fiction in this edition of Franchise Player, a site-crossover podcast of the Ole Miss Spirit (On3) and Inside the Rebels (247).
Here’s a brief exchange in the nearly one-hour conversation.
Ben: Now that Ole Miss’ SEC West title hopes have been dashed after the loss to Alabama on Saturday, (Lane Kiffin’s status) is now the story. Even if they beat Arkansas and Mississippi State, they’re going to go play in an exhibition game in Orlando (the Citrus Bowl).
David: Correct. Just reading and talking to some trusted Auburn reporters, I don’t think there’s much doubt at all Lane Kiffin’s the No. 1 target.
Ben: Don’t think Keith Carter doesn’t have a list. I know he has a list. If the worst-case scenario happens, you’re talking about a week-long coaching search, because December 5 is when the transfer window opens up.
David: He’s working both sides of the coin. He’s doing everything he can right now, I’m sure, to keep Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss. At the same time, he’s got lines out. He’s got to have.
