San Efrén, sobre todo, es poeta, un inspiradísimo poeta como pocos hayan existido en toda la historia de la humanidad. Tiene preciosos comentarios a las Sagradas Escrituras. Encantadores sus "Himnos fúnebres". Compuso muchos himnos y comentarios preciosos sobre la Virgen María, especialmente sobre la Inmaculada. Bien ha merecido el título de "Cantor de la Virgen Inmaculada".
