What an exceptionally unusual year that we’ve had! We can’t believe that it’s the Advent season. For us, the liturgical calendar of Advent serves as reset for us as we come together and remember the birth of our Savior Jesus. During this season, we’re reminded of God’s story among a people who, just like us, were living in a season of deferred hope. When hope escapes us, we can easily fall prey to shrugging our shoulders, having a “we’ll see” type of attitude. Christmas resets us. Kitty & I love Christmas in Franklin!
This little town that we’ve called home for the last 18 years always shows off its “specialness” around Christmas. It seems effortless to get into the Christmas spirit with events like the Dickens of a Christmas, the Franklin Christmas Parade, the showing of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the quaint Franklin Theatre, and the lighting of the Christmas Tree in the Square. But 2020 has been a year of making scheduling changes on the fly. We had to re-think our Easter plans, Mother’s Day, graduations, weddings, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving… and we are not quite ready to give up Christmas. Many people are thinking about how to do Christmas throughout the world, and we kept coming back to the idea that “Christmas isn’t canceled!”
Because now, more than ever, we need hope, peace, love, and joy. We need to press into the meaning of Christmas because it’s easy for circumstances to determine our attitudes. But with Christmas, we pause to celebrate the coming of our Savior Lord into this world at the perfect time. It’s so easy to look at what’s going on around us and let those things rob us of what Jesus gives to us freely: hope, peace, love, and joy!
This week, we are looking at Advent Peace.
