This week’s episode Negative ROI. The Rhino Onward International (ROI) scandal involves a $46 million renewable energy swindle centered around false promises in the green hydrogen industry. Launched in 2022, ROI, led by Paul Croft and J.D. Frost, claimed it would build a green hydrogen plant worth $530 million. They attracted $31 million from over 200 investors, many of whom were their accounting and tax advisory clients, believing in the legitimacy of their venture. 

Hence the title Negative ROI and one could say Frost froze those investors assets.

This week’s episode Big Cat Phishing. This week we are going to talk about the #1 Cyber Attack reported by the FBI in 2023 and that is Phishing/Spoofing. According to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report for 2023, phishing and spoofing emerged as the top cyber threat, accounting for 39% of the 758,000+ complaints filed throughout the year. Shockingly, all these incidents resulted in total losses exceeding $12.5 billion.*
Given these staggering statistics, it's crucial for organizations to assess their susceptibility to such attacks.

This week’s episode Deepfake Out. AI turned against us reminds me of Terminator. Machines take over and wipe out the humans. Well, this is less violent, but still AI was used to impersonate visually a CFO to request $25 million be transferred to the fraudsters using deepfake technology in a video conference call. Sound unbelievable, it just happened a couple months ago.

This week’s episode A Bit Conned. Last season we explored the FTX bankruptcy of the major crypto currency exchange. This story of Ray Trapani and Centra Tech is even more unbelievable because he scammed $32 million from investors and ultimately got away with it. The Netflix show Bitconned is almost con itself since Ray laughs at how he becomes famous lying, cheating, stealing, and ratting out his partner to get away with the scam. This kid boasts that he has always wanted to be a criminal and rich.
