PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Eduardo “Edu” Cortes, director of the film Hablame de ti.
Hablame de ti was a big hit in Mexico when it was released last October, and this is not surprising because it is not easy to find coming of age in Mexican cinematography. Although less coming of age with LGBT themes. And yet, Hablame de ti conquers audiences, often young ones, wherever it is screened, as happened at the 38th edition of the Lovers Film Festival. We interviewed director Eduardo Cortes who told us how this film came about, the challenges it faced, and how his film wants to connect with younger audiences.
Hablame de ti:Chava starts getting messages from a secret admirer. In the process he’ll find that there are secrets in his family that will help him to discover who he really is.

PODCAST | Federica Scarpa interviews Mike Doyle, director of the film Passing Through.
In his second feature film as director, Mike Doyle explores new genres and territories in Passing Through, an introspective film in which the protagonist faces himself and his demons. Doyle tells us how the idea for this very personal film was born, shot during a 10-day journey in which challenges and difficulties were not lacking.
Passing Through: After months of witnessing devastating loss, Mike finds he hasn’t the strength to leave his apartment nor the will to face another day of sickness and death. As a frontline healthcare worker, he has been stretched to his limit, and he can no longer bear the pain. Mike holes up in his apartment, stuck, deeply depressed, not knowing how he will emerge intact. As a pandemic rages outside his door, he slowly finds the strength to carry on and break free, and decides to embark on a journey across the country to rediscover himself and what he has lost over these past several grueling months. Mike orders some camping gear and tests it in his apartment. Everything seems like it is going to work out for him on this new adventure. But something is not quite right. Once on the road and isolated in the great expanse of America, Mike begins to encounter strange things. He wonders if he’s losing his mind or something more nefarious is at play. In the idyll of the open road, Mike confronts his past and breaks free of the bonds that have held him captive, only to discover that everything is not at all what he thought it was. Ultimately, Mike is released, but his catharsis retains a hint of mystery – was Mike the agent of change or a victim of his circumstances? Either way, he has passed through to something beautiful and new.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Ann Oren, director of the film Piaffe.
After Locarno Film Festival last summer, Ann Oren is at the 36th Bolzano Film Festival for the Italian premiere of her first feature film, Piaffe. Based on a short film, Passage, Piaffe is also an homage to Foley artistry. As it is, in a way, also a coming of age following its protagonist Eva, Piaffe doesn’t follow the usual character’s arch, instead, tries to follow the narrative of life.
Piaffe: When her sibling Zara suffers a nervous breakdown, the introvert Eva is forced to take on Zara’s job as a Foley artist. She struggles to create sounds for a commercial featuring a horse, and then a horsetail starts growing out of her body. Empowered by her tail, she lures a botanist into an affair through a game of submission. Piaffe is a visceral journey into control, gender, and artifice.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Marta Andreu, filmmaker, producer, and academic director.
Cinema is something we have to make an experience of, that the audience have to touch. These are some of the basis filmmaker, producer, and academic director Marta Andreu starts from in her lectures and in the Masterclass she held at the 36Th Bolzano Film Festival, Surviving Landscape.
In 2017 Marta Andreu created WALDEN, a space for documentary creation. Since 2000 she teaches documentary seminars and workshops internationally (DocNomads, Di Tella University, EICTV, CCC, Frontera Sur, AricaLab, DocumentaMadrid, DOCSP, Ibermedia, Playdoc, Ventana Madrid, CIMA…) and she works as a tutor for Eurodoc, Torino Film Lab, Visions du Réel, DocMontevideo. Since 2011 She’s a member of the World Cinema Fund. In 2004 she founded Playtime and produced LA TERRA HABITADA (Visions du Réel 2009), CUCHILLO DE PALO (Berlinale 2010), SALÓME (NordiskPanorma 2014, Best Film Award), OLEG (Rotterdam 2015); AMANECER (FICCI 2018, Best Film Award).
Surviving Landscapes We know it, and we feel it probably every day…. Nature seems to perish. There is a visible, palpable wound that does not go away and can do nothing but remind us of our part. Indeed, “places die like people, even though they seem to survive”, as a french poet once said. What to do about it? Or, more precisely, what can art do about it? What can cinema do? I would like to propose a journey from a hundred-year old recovered image of a volcano (from a film that Jean Epstein made in Italy in 1923) to a painted mountain obsessively chased by Cezanne more than eighty times and later mourned twice by cinema (in two films by Jean Marie Straub and Danielle Huillet). And from there to a fragile encounter between a mountain and a contemporary filmmaker, Salome Lamas, on a Portuguese island. Through bits and pieces of cinema, poetry, painting, and maybe even music, I seek to remind us that perhaps it is through creation that we can restore to the landscape the possibility of resistance and survival.

PODCAST | Francesca Raffi interviews Marie Campbell, professional audio describer and lead trainer in Red Bee Media’s Audio Description team.
Using her 20+ years of describing experience, as well as her training expertise across Red Bee Media’s English language operations, Marie Campbell will look back at the journey AD editorial guidelines have been on with regards to sensitive content, starting when AD in the UK was in its infancy and the nascent guidelines were predicated on a linear televisual landscape that looked, by default, much more “white” and “male” compared to what we see on our screens today. She will explore how a desire to avoid “othering” led to outdated guidelines that failed to describe the diversity of the world we live in as televisual content started to change and embrace that diversity in a more visual and meaningful way.
Marie Campbell has been describing for over 20 years and is the lead trainer in Red Bee Media’s Audio Description team. She started out in London, helping to set up the BBC’s first ever AD department, where she developed editorial guidelines and new bespoke software while integrating the service into the wider, well-established broadcast chain. Marie has described for the majority of UK broadcasters, overseen the describing of 200+ films on the theme of disability for the British Film Institute and been part of the pre- recorded AD team during the Winter and Summer Paralympics. She continues to be at the forefront of AD excellence, developing guidelines and using her expertise to train new scriptwriters and voicers in the UK, USA and Australia, tailoring the service to different English-speaking countries, while integrating workflows, maximising collaboration and providing ongoing support to new AD teams. Marie is currently looking at how e-learning can be used to facilitate audio description training.
Since 2007, ARSAD has been the meeting point for researchers, industry, trainers, trainees, users, practitioners, regulators, broadcasters, policy makers, social activists, cultural managers and anyone interested in audio description. The 2023 edition will kick start discussing the growing role of technology as a cornerstone of our everyday interactions. Technology facilitates contact, provides new opportunities but it also faces us with some challenges. In this technologically-driven world an awareness of social aspects is also growing, from diversity to sustainability, with collaboration at the core of many social actions. Within this context ARSAD aims to be a thought-provoking event where we can learn about the present of audio description across the globe from multidisciplinary perspectives and where we can get a glimpse of the future of this fascinating access mode.
