But with no connections, they’ll first have to sneak into Crystal Entertainment Offices and impress the powerful and egotistical entertainment mogul — and likely gangster— wolf, Jimmy Crystal, to prove that they are worthy of his stage. • Blerta Basholli – Hive #SydFilmFest

PODCAST| Cristiana Palmieri interviews Blerta Basholli, director and screenwriter of the film Hive.

Director and screenwriter Blerta Basholli shares with FRED that when she became familiar with Fahrije Hoti’s story she felt overwhelmed by the tenacity and the courage of this indomitable woman. Despite being a story profoundly rooted in the Kossovo’s culture and history, Hive is a universal powerful story.

Hive : The debut feature by Kosovo-born filmmaker Blerta Basholli is inspired by real-life beekeeper Fahrije Hoti. Seven years after Fahrije’s husband went missing in the Kosovo War, she is struggling to provide for her two children. Her plan to establish a women’s co-operative and sell ajvar (pepper relish) is met with scorn by men in her village. In this patriarchal place, a woman’s morals can be questioned for even the slightest show of independence. But Fahrije is no ordinary woman.

  • Srđan Keča – Museum of the Revolution #IDFA2021

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Srđan Keča, director of the documentary Museum of the Revolution.

A conversation with Srđan Keča, director of Museum of the Revolution, a new documentary presented at IDFA 2021. The film observes the life of marginalized people living on the old ruins of a ambitious title building, which was never completed. In this interview, Keča discusses the intersection of history and contemporary times, the dangers of gentrification and how he was able to establish a relationship with both the location and the protagonists of his documentary.

Museum of the Revolution : “The wind got up in the night and took our plans away,” reads the proverb in the opening titles of Museum of the Revolution. The words are a reference to the 1961 plan to build a grand museum in Belgrade as a tribute to Socialist Yugoslavia. It was supposed to “safeguard the truth” about the Yugoslav people. But the plan never got beyond the construction of the basement. The derelict building now tells a very different story from the one envisioned by the initiators 60 years ago. In the damp, pitch-dark building live the outcasts of a society reshaped by capitalism. The film focuses on a girl who earns a little cash on the street by cleaning car windows with her mother. The girl has a close friendship with an old woman who also lives in the basement. Against the background of a transforming city, the three women find refuge in each other.

  • Tuija Halttunen – How to Kill a Cloud #SydFilmFest

PODCAST| Cristiana Palmieri interviews Tuija Halttunen, director and screenwriter of the film How to Kill a Cloud.

Tuija Halttunen talks about the making of How to kill a cloud, exploring how she deals with the complex issue of science versus ethics, without forcing the audience to take a side. She also explores challenges and opportunities presented by the fascinating process of making the film while immersed in a cultural context that she had never explored before.

How to Kill a Cloud : Hannele Korhonen, a brilliant Finnish scientist, takes on a multimillion-dollar three-year project funded by the United Arab Emirates, to make rain in the desert. Korhonen sees it as an opportunity to further her research into clouds and their behaviour, and to bring about the seemingly impossible. But creating artificial rain may have unforeseen and unwelcome impacts. It soon becomes clear that her sponsors have their own agenda. Caught in a fiendish dilemma between research, finance, politics and ecosystems, Korhonen’s integrity is at risk. A fascinating and highly topical documentary.
