The film finds him filming in a small village on the border between Russia and Ukraine, and pondering on the nature and purpose of cinema at large. In this film, he discusses with us his personal connection with this type of setting, his personal concerns with the balance between art and commerce, whether he believes the term documentary is too restrictive for his movie and more.
Krai : Russian-born director Aleksey Lapin travels back to his relatives’ home village near the Ukrainian border, where he himself used to spend every summer. The film crew introduce themselves at a specially organized musical event, claiming that they have come to cast a historical film that is to be set in the village. What follows is a charming, semi-fictional documentary by and with the village community.

Cyrano: Cyrano de Bergerac dazzles everyone with his ferocious wordplay and brilliant swordplay. However, he’s convinced his appearance renders him unworthy of the affections of the luminous Roxanne, a devoted friend who’s in love with someone else.

The Young Lovers: Seventy-year-old Shauna, a sophisticated, free-spirited and independent woman and a retired architect, has shelved her love life altogether, but one day she accidently runs into Pierre, a forty-five-year-old happily married doctor and father, who had made a deep impression on her during a brief encounter fifteen years earlier. He still sees her as an attractive woman, but they are both wary of starting a relationship. While Pierre’s family life soon falls apart, Shauna fights against emotions and feelings that she thought were only in the past.

In this film, Baker explains to us the meaning of “suitcase pimp” and what it is he finds about these people so interesting. He also shares his thoughts on the American dreams, working with Simon Rex on his impressive leading performance in this movie and more.

Festival director Elysia Zeccola talks about the challenging time for the arts and entertainment industries, and how going back to see films on the big screen symbolises going back to some forms of normality. Despite the uncertain circumstances related to the lockdown in major Australian cities, the Italian Film Festivals offers a remarkable program, including big titles such as A Chiara by Jonas Carpignano, winner of the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes.
The festival opened nationally on October 20th with the Australian premiere of Daniele Luchetti’s Lacci, which opened last year’s Venice Film Festival, and closes on December 12th with Roberto Rosselini’s Roma citta’ aperta, recently restored by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna.

The festival director Nashen Moodley talks about the extremely challenging times for the film industry, and how the festival arrives as a breath of fresh air after almost four long months of lockdown in Sydney. Nashen explores the festival line-up that this year is complemented by a bespoke program online through SFF On Demand, a virtual offering of 56 feature-length films and 13 shorts from the wider program available to stream nationally from 12-21 November.
This year the festival present 233 films from 69 countries, bringing together hundreds of international and local stories. There are 111 feature films, including prize-winners from prestigious festivals around the world; 50 documentaries tackling crucial contemporary issues from established and upcoming documentarians; and 72 shorts. Of these films almost half are directed or co-directed by woman filmmakers.
