A conversation with filmmaker Sine Skibsholt, whose documentary Long, Live, Love won the top prize at Romania’s Astra Film Festival and will be screened at the upcoming edition of the International Film Festival Amsterdam. The film documents the relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter, who has faced mortality a few times in her young life. In this interview, Skibsholt shares how her own familiarity with such situations helps her approach this subject in her film, as well as how she met her protagonists and where her interest in documentary filmmaking originates.

Long, Live, Love: Rosemarie, age 15, has already survived cancer twice. It has given her a forceful character and a strong will. Now that she’s recovered, she wants to get on with life—with school, friends, love, parties. But Rosemarie isn’t alone in dealing with trauma. Her young mother has to learn to handle an adolescent daughter, while she has yet to come to terms with the fear of losing her child. The result is a search to establish a new relationship. How do you support a family member with a serious illness? And how do you respond when she has to reinvent herself?

In this interview, Zinshtein expands of the political significance of this link, talks about how she was able to get such insight and shares her thoughts on the “democratic” nature of her films.

‘Til Kingdom Come: This revelatory examination of the controversial links between U.S. evangelical Christians and Israeli Jews begins in a poor mining town in Kentucky. After shooting practice, a young pastor encourages the faithful to go collecting for the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, the biggest charitable organization in Israel.

Director Ricky Mastro and producer Léon Diana describe the experience of shooting 7 Minutes, the potential issue of being disturbing of some scenes that they wanted to keep, and the path to have the film made, which began at Lovers Goes Industry in Turin in 2018.

7 Minutes: Jean, a 55-year-old cop finds her son, Maxime, and his boyfriend hanged in a hotel room. The autopsy reveals that he died of a GHB overdose, just seven minutes after his boyfriend. Trying to find out more about what happened, Jean discovers Club Bisou, his son’s favorite place, where he meets Fabien whom he grows fond of. The desire to discover his son’s world will take him to dangerous and unsettling terrain.

Matthew Fifer has penned with his co-director Kieran Mulcare an intense and surprising first feature film. Based on a personal story, the film is a truly independent production and Matthew talks about its genesis, and the way he used this as a personal therapy , creating though a poignant and beautiful movie.

Cicada: After a series of unsuccessful and embarrassing encounters with women, Ben, a young bisexual, returns to the gay world and develops an intense relationship with Sam, a black man struggling with deep wounds. As the summer progresses and their intimacy grows, Ben’s past comes to the surface. It is a film of love, of great pain but also of immense joy, with two actors who relive parts of their experiences. A sensual and profound film, a debut to keep an eye on.
