  • Michael Etherton – UK Jewish Film Festival

PODCAST | Sarah Bradbury interviews Michael Etherton, Chief Executive of the UK Jewish Film Festival.

We sit down with Michael Etherton, the Chief Executive of the UK Jewish Film Festival, to hear about the role of the festival and its programme for 2019 from classics such as When Harry Met Sally to new releases like Jo Jo Rabbit. Etherton also told us why it’s still important to challenge stereotypes in the representation of Jewish people on screen, bring those representations to a broad audience in the face of rising anti-semitism and how humour and satire can also be a surprisingly effective way to open up people’s perspectives.

At the core of UK Jewish Film’s values is the notion that film is universal. It crosses cultures and divides and has the ability to unite, engage and educate diverse audiences through the telling of cinematic stories that provide stimulating, interesting and unique views of Jewish and Israeli life and culture. UK Jewish Film aims to develop a culture where Jewish and Israeli film is recognised and enjoyed by the widest possible audience, and to bring Jewish related film to the heart of British culture. UK Jewish Film – through its flagship, annual, two week UK Jewish Film Festival (with approx 15,000 visitors), its festival in Geneva, as well as its 450 year-round screenings and previews at venues across London and the UK, showcases a wide range of feature films, documentaries and shorts, which reflect the diversity of Jewish and Israeli life and culture. Since its inception the UK Jewish Film Festival has welcomed over 300,000 visitors. Its popular video on demand platform brings its unique provision of film to many more. The organisation also runs acclaimed education programmes that reach hundreds of young people each year. UKJF’s work encourages pride in and knowledge of Jewish culture amongst younger generations and promotes understanding and awareness towards Jewish and Israeli people and culture. The 23rd UK Jewish Film Festival will take place from 6 – 21 November 2019, bringing the best of contemporary Jewish cinema from around the world, to a diverse range of UK audiences.

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Brian Welsh, actress of the film Beats.

Brian Welsh, director of Beats, talks about his love for music and the larger significance of it for himself and therefore for the characters in his film. Music is freedom, techno music was (and it is not much anymore) a way to fight the system for less controlling and oppressive social rules. the same ones that, back in the 90’s, England was trying to impose by law. A powerful and energetic film, a call for youth and freedom of being.

  • Chris Buck, Peter Del Vecho – Frozen 2

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Chris Buck and Peter Del Vecho, director and producer of the film Frozen 2.

“As soon as you think you found your way, a new road opens up”. Co-director (with Jennifer Lee) Chris Buck and producer Peter Del Vecho of Frozen 2 comment on one of the new challenges Elsa and Anna have to face in the second chapter of this Walt Disney Animation success coming out in theatres on November 22nd and in Italy on 27th. Elsa and Anna are adults now and they feel the responsibility of their people, of Arendelle’s destiny. Is there a burden and such a responsibility in directing/producing a film like Frozen 2 that directly talks to children already in love with Anna, Elsa and Olaf ? Chris Buck and Peter Del Vecho also comment on the possibility for a spin-off since the post credits scene will leave the audience with some hope.

Frozen 2: Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In Frozen, Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In Frozen 2, she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award-winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, Frozen 2 opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2019.

  • Robert De Niro, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, Stephen Graham – The Irishman #LFF2019

PODCAST | Sarah Bradbury interviews on the red carpet of the BFI London Film Festival Robert De Niro, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel and Stephen Graham, actors of the film The Irishman.

Martin Scorsese’s ninth collaboration with Robert De Niro finds the master filmmaker returning to the genre he has helped define, with a mystery that has never been solved.

The Irishman: Who killed Jimmy Hoffa? A labour leader and the infamous head of the Teamsters union, whose connections with organised crime were wide ranging, his career ended with a conviction for jury tampering, attempted bribery and fraud, but he was pardoned by President Nixon in 1971. Not long after, he disappeared. Declared legally dead in 1982, various theories have circulated as to what happened to him. Few are as convincing as that told by Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran. The account he revealed to journalist Charles Brandt and published in the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses, is the basis of this riveting, epic crime drama. Written by Gangs of New York collaborator Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List), Scorsese’s The Irishman weaves an engrossing and intricate web of connected events, audaciously cutting back and forth across decades. Presented through the prism of Sheeran’s (De Niro) memories of his criminal past, the film uses state-of-the-art visual effects to ‘de-age’ the cast from their 70s through their 30s. The seamless (and astonishing) post-production allows Scorsese to bring together a favoured megawatt cast, all on exceptional form: the former Goodfellas pairing of De Niro and Joe Pesci (out of retirement here for Scorsese), alongside Harvey Keitel, Stephen Graham, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Bobby Cannavale and Ray Romano. Al Pacino, appearing for the first time in a Scorsese film, gives a performance as Jimmy Hoffa so good you’ll want to watch scenes again straight away, not least the many two-handers with Pacino’s Hoffa and De Niro’s Irishman Sheeran, whose friendship forms the heart of the film. What a way to close the LFF – with a total showstopper.

Knives Out by Rian Johnson premiered at the London Film Festival; on the red carpet for the screening Katherine Langford talks with us about the experience of such a star-filled set and her approach to the whodunit genre.

Knives Out: Murder mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is a veritable one-man crime-fiction industry and his adult children – and their children – have been living off him for years. When he turns up dead, the apparent victim of a murder, it seems that no-one has a motive for killing the golden goose. At least, that’s what the detectives assigned to the case think. But Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) – the debonair ‘Kentucky-fried’ private investigator mysteriously hired by an anonymous source – has other ideas.
