  • Bob Murawski, Jan Filip Rymsza – The Other Side of the Wind #Venezia75

PODCAST| Matt Micucci interviews Bob Murawski and Jan Filip Rymsza, editor and producer of the film The Other Side of the Wind.

Interview with editor Bob Murawski and producer Filip Jan Rymsza about the special premiere screening of Orson Welles lost epic, The Other Side of the Wind, at the 2018 Venice Film Festival. Rymsza tells us the story of the film and where the wealth of footage was found, while Murawski tells us about his reaction to this original material and the various challenges involved in the process of putting the cinematic mosaic together – especially considering that its filmmaker, Welles, died back in 1985. Murawski also received the newly established Campari Passion for Film Award in Venice.

The Other Side of the Wind: In 1970, legendary director Orson Welles began filming what would ultimately be his final cinematic opus with a cast of luminaries that included John Huston, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and Welles’s partner during his later years, Oja Kodar. Beset by financial issues, the production ultimately stretched to 1976 and soon gained industry-wide notoriety, never to be completed or released. More than a thousand reels of film languished in a Paris vault until March 2017, when producers Frank Marshall (who served as a production manager on Wind during in its initial shooting) and Filip Jan Rymsza spearheaded efforts to have Welles’s vision completed more than 30 years after his death. Featuring a new score by Oscar-winning composer Michel Legrand and assembled by a technical team including Oscar- winning editor Bob Murawski, The Other Side of the Wind tells the story of famed filmmaker J.J. “Jake” Hannaford, who returns to Hollywood after years in self-exile in Europe with plans to complete work on his own innovative comeback movie. A satire of the classic studio system as well as the new establishment who were shaking things up at the time, Welles’s final film is both a fascinating time capsule of a now-distant era in moviemaking as well as the long-awaited “new” work from an indisputable master of his craft.

  • Yaron Shani – Stripped #Venezia75

PODCAST| Matt Micucci interviews Yaron Shani, director of the film Stripped.

An interview with filmmaker Yaron Shani, director of Stripped, which premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 75th Venice Film Festival. This is the first part of Shani’s previously announced Love Trilogy, which explores the theme through a blurring of reality and fiction. The director talks about its interesting process and collaboration with the non-professional actors, and shares with us his thought on the theme of love, connection and his lack of belief in clearly defined differences between the good and the bad in people – also in relation to his own identity as a filmmaker within a film festival context.

Stripped: 34-year-old Alice’s recent success in the literary world is upset by disturbing feelings of anxiety. Invasive images of sexual abuse haunt her and panic attacks intensify, leaving her stripped of all confidence and desire for human contact. In the building across the street, 17-year-old Ziv lives with his parents. He’s a talented young man who dreams of being a professional musician. When leaving for the army the demands of adulthood fall hard on him, he will be left sad and vulnerable, stripped of his dreams and innocence. A random call from neighbour Alice will allow him to meet the object of his teenage fantasies. The critical meeting of these two modern urbanites will produce both destruction and growth, violence and grace.

  • Paul Iacovou – The Ghost of Peter Sellers #Venezia75

PODCAST| Nicolò Comotti interviews Paul Iacovou, producer of the film The Ghost of Peter Sellers.

Paul Iacovou joins us at our studio booth in Venice to discuss his latest production: The Ghost of Peter Sellers. The Ghost of Peter Sellers unearths the traumatic experience that esteemed director Peter Medak had whilst attempting to shoot the 1973 comedy Ghost on the Noonday Sun. The trauma had a face, a voice and a one-of-a-kind charisma: Peter Sellers.

The Ghost of Peter Sellers: In 1973 Peter Sellers embarked on a pirate comedy for Columbia Pictures. He lost confidence with the film immediately and tried to sabotage it, firing the producers then turning on his friend the director, Peter Medak. At its core lies the story of an unraveling production but also the tale of a young director firmly on a path to greatness. Medak had made 3 back-to-back successes; most notably The Ruling Class in ‘72 with Peter O’ Toole (nominated for the Palme d’Or). This film changed his career forever. After 45 years the wounds have barely healed for Medak and this is his opportunity to tell the story and finally relieve himself of the burden associated with its failure. The Ghost of Peter Sellers is a comic-tragic feature doc about what it takes to be a film director and survive your biggest disaster.
