Anna Matamala is Senior Lecturer in Audiovisual Translation at the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and she is Member of TransMedia research group and TransMedia Catalonia.

As leader of MAP, Media Accessibility Platform that he founded together with three researchers Gian Maria Greco, Anna Matamala and Pilar Orero, Pablo Romero Fresco talks about the Media Accessibility Platform International Conference that took place in Vigo last October and its action points. He gives his personal definition of media accessibility and tells us about his contribution to the UMAQ project “Understanding Media Accessibility Quality” with the panel Negotiating Quality in Accessibility: The Case of Live Subtitling. Pablo Romero Fresco is also a filmmaker and his first documentary, Joining the Dots (2012), was used by Netflix as well as schools around Europe to raise awareness about audiodescription. Now he’s currently working on new documentary.

Agnieszka Szarkowska is currently Research Fellow at the Centre for Translation Studies, University College London (2016-2018). She is now working on the SURE project: Exploring Subtitle Reading Process with Eye Tracking Technology. Since 2007, she has also been Assistant Professor in the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw. She is the founder and head of the Audiovisual Translation Lab (AVT Lab) and specializes in audiovisual translation, especially subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing and audio description. She is a member of European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST), European Society for Translation Studies (EST) and an honorary member of the Polish Audiovisual Translators Association (STAW). In the interview, Dr Szarkowska describes the current situation of media accessibility at both national and international level, both in academic and non-academic contexts. She also presents some interesting results stemming from one of her latest projects, Exploring Subtitle Reading with Eye Tracking Technology (SURE), which received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The study was conducted at the Centre for Translation Studies in cooperation with Deafness Cognition and Language Centre at University College London in spring 2017. The goal of the project was to experimentally study the subtitle reading process in terms of optimum subtitle presentation times (reading speed) and line breaks (segmentation).

Pablo Romero Fresco, the Ramón y Cajal grant holder at Universidade de Vigo (Spain) and Honorary Professor of Translation and Filmmaking at the University of Roehampton (London, UK), talks to us about new projects on accessible filmmaking and about the results of the international conference held in Vigo last October.

Eilon Ratzkovsky is an Israelian film producer, known for his films In the Dark Room (2013) and Atlit (2014). At Sarajevo Film Festival, he is one of the mentors working with the screenwriters participating in 12th Talents Sarajevo – Script Station. For FRED Film Radio, he talks about his experience with the Sarajevo film festival and his work as a mentor to young scriptwriters.

For FRED Film Radio, she gives insight into her work as a mentor, reflects on her career in the film and TV industry as well as emphasizes the importance of film festivals in filmmaker’s career. PODCAST| Nadina Štefančič interviews international casting director Debbie McWilliams.
Debbie McWilliams is an internationally renowned casting director from the UK, who has most famously cast the last 13 films from the James Bond franchise. Among the directors she has worked with are Roman Polanski, Stephen Frears, Anthony Minghella, Sam Mendes, Martin Campbell, and Ron Howard. McWilliams was a guest of the program “Casting at the Heart of Filmmaking” at the 24th Edition of Sarajevo film Festival, centering on the casting profession, organized in cooperation with the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN). As a part of the program, she held a masterclass for the participants of Talents Sarajevo, talking to them about collaborating with casting directors. In our interview, she told us about the media attention that comes with casting films with a huge fan base, how the transgender actors are starting to get their mark in the film industry and in what way young actors can improve their possibilities for getting cast in international films.

PODCAST| Nadina Štefančič interviews Thanos Psichogios, director of the film Remember.
Thanos Psichogios is a Greek film director, currently working on his feature film Remember. He was one of the participants of the Pack & Pitch program – a part of 12th Sarajevo Talents program at the 24th Sarajevo Film Festival. He pitched his film project to international film professionals, scouting for up-an-coming talent and won The Best Pack & Pitch Award. In our interview Psichogios talked about the story behind his new film, why he chose a 16-year old girl as the protagonist, how today’s Greece will be characterized through the narrative and why hope is the central theme of his art.
