PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews Juan Sebastian Mesa, director of The Nobodies (Los Nadie), winner of the top prize in the Critics’ Week section of Venezia 73.
“Nobody can make a film…”
FRED has the pleasure of catching up with Juan Sebastian Mesa, a promising young director and the mind behind the film The Nobodies (Los Nadie), which earned the top prize at the 2016 edition of the International Critics’ Week section of the Venice Film Festival. Not a bad claim for a feature debut.
THE NOBODIES (LOS NADIE). Camilo, Mechas, Manu, Ana and Pipa are five friends going through that blended trance of intense unrest, astonishment, contained tenderness and manifested rage that is typical of the end of adolescence. They survive at the edges of a city, Medellin, that simultaneously attracts and excludes them, that lure them with promises but rejects them with hostility. Nevertheless, they want to embrace the city and fight against its logics of fear. Music, street art and friendship are their weapons of resistance, hoping for a rite of passage that could transform them into someone else.

PODCAST | Cristiana Palmieri interviews Ruth Borgobello, director and screenwriter of the film The Space Between, which screened at the 2016 Lavazza Italian Film Festival.
Ruth Borgobello talks about her own journey as an Australian Italian and how her double belonging has influenced the making of her debut feature, The Space Between, and her artistic career more broadly.
The Space Between is the first Italo Australian co-production, marking the beginning of a new era of film production across two hemispheres.
THE SPACE BETWEEN is an emotional tale of love and loss set in the evocative region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in North East Italy. It tells the story of Marco, a 35 year-old ex-chef, who has given up his career and any sense of hope to return to Udine in Northern Italy to nurse his ailing father. Even when offered a job at a restaurant in Melbourne, he declines using his father as the excuse. When tragedy strikes, the only glimmer of joy arrives in the form of Olivia, a spirited Australian chasing her dream of working in design while on a family mission in Udine. Against the stunning vineyards, rugged mountains and blue Adriatic of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, these two very different people find themselves at a crossroads that will change their lives forever.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews director Eduardo Roy Jr., who talks about his new film Ordinary People from the 73rd Venice Film Festival [Venice Days]
Ordinary People is the story of a young couple living on the streets whose child is hopelessly kidnapped. This sets them off on a desperate search, and makes the narrative of the film, which Eduardo Roy Jr. presented in the Venice Days section of the 73rd Venice Film Festival. He joins us for an interview, in which he reveals his behind the scenes work on the film, in trying to achieve a sense of realism, which is also achieved thanks to his work in preparing and directing his young and somewhat inexperienced cast. The film was also shot right on the streets of Manila, which certainly evokes a sense of realism. But was it difficult to do that. Beyond Ordinary People, we discuss his interests as a filmmaker, and whether or as an artist he seeks for representation of realism in his works.
ORDINARY PEOPLE is a family portrait of Jane, 16, and her boyfriend, Aries, who live on their own in the chaotic streets of Manila. Surviving as pickpockets, the lives of the young couple change when they suddenly become teenage parents. But not even a month into parenthood, their child is stolen from them. In order to retrieve the child, the young couple is forced to take desperate measures.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Ken Loach, director of I, Daniel Blake, at the film’s Italian presentation.
FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Ken Loach, in Rome for the Italian release of I, Daniel Blake. The film earned Ken Loach his second Palme d’Or in Cannes this year after The Wind That Shakes The Barley in 2006.
Loach tells us about the research he did to discover this sad world of poor people going through the bureaucratic nightmare of welfare policies. His protagonist Daniel and his friend Katie bounce on a wall when having to deal with the robot-like people that work in the job centre.
The film shows us how important it is to try and change the economic model in which we ‘re living and to work on building an european solidarity between countries but most of all, among working class people.
I, DANIEL BLAKE. Daniel Blake, 59, has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, after a heart attack and nearly falling from a scaffold, he needs help from the State for the first time in his life. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain
