  • Nick Hamm, Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney – The Journey #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews director Nick Hamm and actors Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney, who talk about their film The Journey from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Nick Hamm’s film The Journey, screened out of competition at the 73rd Venice Film Festival, is based on the true story of the meeting between Unionist leader Ian Paisley and Irish Republican leader Martin McGuinness, that happened some ten years ago and led to the beginning of the end of the dark years of the violence and terrorism of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

We caught up with the director and the two, fantastic leading actors, Timothy Spall, who plays Paisley, and Meaney, who portrayed McGuinness. The two actors talk about their performances and how they contributed to the creation of the portrayal of the two famous (and in terms of The Journey‘s narrative, soon-to-be the notorious “Chuckle brothers” duo of politicians).

THE JOURNEY. The British and Irish have gathered the political parties from Northern Ireland in St. Andrews, Scotland, to discuss a landmark agreement. Suddenly peace looks a possibility after the dark days of The Troubles. The only stumbling block is convincing firebrand protestant preacher Ian Paisley and Irish republican Martin McGuinness to accept the deal and govern together. But the two sides will not even talk directly to each other!

  • Grant Hill, Sophokles Tasioulis – Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey #Venezia73

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews producers Grant Hill and Sophokles Tasioulis, who talk about Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

VOYAGE OF TIME: LIFE’S JOURNEY. The universe unfolds before your eyes in this experience for the senses, mind and soul. Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey is an exploration into our planetary past and a search for humanity’s place in the future. Humming with the energy of nature itself, the film melds innovative special effects with awe-inspiring footage from around the globe and beyond, in search of what lasts, what endures, over time. What does it mean, after all those eons, to be us, here, now? The action traces the scientific chronology of the universe, from the birth of the stars to the explosion of new life on earth, to the planet altering debut of humankind. Malick invites audiences to probe past, present and future in intimate ways. The film shows an array of never-witnessed natural phenomena – celestial and terrestrial, macroscopic and microscopic – all informed by a team of cutting edge science advisors.

The fierce geology of the early planet. The first cells, growing, dividing, exploring every niche open to them. The coming of fish, forests, dinosaurs and our own species with its need to reckon with everything – all this transforms into a hymn to nature, life and the universe. No two people will have the same experience.

  • Sergei Loznitsa – Austerlitz #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews director Sergei Loznitsa, who talks about his film Austerlitz from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Tourism and concentration camps. A strange mix that fascinated and sometimes appalled Loznitsa enough to bring it to the screen in his unflinching Austerlitz documentary. The immediacy of the piece, with its use of unmoving camera and black and white photography, evokes the power of the actuality of early cinema. But also, the film invites the viewer to openly interact with the film and come up with their own conclusions.

Austerlitz, in fact, shows no signs of obvious manipulation, and simply portrays its settings of Nazi Concentration Camps and the way in which tourists interact with it in a direct way. We ask Loznitsa about the nature of his film, his need to show it and the reason for his stylistic choices as well as his own personal reactions to the things the documentary shows.

AUSTERLITZ. There are places in Europe that have remained as painful memories of the past—factories where humans were turned into ash. These places are now memorial sites that are open to the public and receive thousands of tourists every year. The film’s title refers to the eponymous novel written by W.G. Sebald, dedicated to the memory of Holocaust. This film is an observation of the visitors to a memorial site that has been founded on the territory of a former concentration camp. Why do they go there? What are they looking for?

  • Verena Kuri, Sofia Brockenshire – One Sister #Venezia73

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews directors Verena Kuri and Sofia Brockenshire, who talk about their new movie One Sister, from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Kuri and Brockenshire tells us how it is to manage a four-hands-direction of a film with a defined and blocked budget and a determined schedule that cannot be moved, either. Some choices were forced but luckily so, as the film is well paced and intriguing and with a smart ending.

ONE SISTER. In a small Argentinian backwater town, a young woman sets out on a solitary search for her sister who has disappeared without a trace. When the family’s car appears in flames on the bank of a nearby river, Alba falls deeper into a world of bureaucratic frustrations, bringing her to the edge of despair. Her journey drags her back to the river, where a silent witness seems to provide the only calm that’s left.

  • Jorge Thielen Armand – The Solitude #Venezia73

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews director Jorge Thielen Armand, who talks about his new movie The Solitude, from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Director Jorge Thielen Armand embarked on a difficult trip when he decided to tell us his story, the true story, of his parents’ hometown of Caracas, with its real inhabitants needing to leave and relocate in a city on the verge of financial disaster – much like the country of Venezuela as a whole. A touching and impactful film, the power of the film is enhanced by knowing that what we are seeing on the screen is the real person, not the actor, and the facts that we are being told show what is really happening in real life.

THE SOLITUDE (LA SOLEDAD). is a dilapidated villa located in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods of Caracas. It used to be the home of director Jorge Thielen Armand’s great-grandparents, but when the owners passed away fifteen years ago, the property was unofficially inherited by their lifelong maid, Rosina, now 72, who remained to care for the house and raise her grandson, José, now 27, Jorge’s childhood friend. José works as a handyman, dreaming of a better life for his six-year-old daughter Adrializ, amidst Venezuela’s economic crisis. Waiting in long queues for food and the medicine Rosina so desperately needs is part of José’s routine. When he learns that the legal inheritors of the house plan to sell the estate, José struggles to try to find a solution that will keep his family away from the crime-ridden slums. Yet the house holds a secret that could save them all: a treasure that is rumored to be buried in its walls. Set in the beautiful derelict eponymous mansion and played by the real inhabitants, La Soledad poetically depicts Venezuela’s socio-economic crisis through José’s struggle to save his family from homelessness.

  • Midi Z – The Road To Mandalay #Venezia73

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews director Midi Z, who talks about his film The Road to Mandalay from the 73rd Venice Film Festival [Venice Days]

FRED Film Radio has the chance to discuss with director Midi Z about his new feature The Road to Mandalay, here at Venice Days 2016.

THE ROAD TO MANDALAY. The people-traffickers have a well-established route: from Burma into Thailand across the Mekong River at Tachileik; along quiet country roads; passing bribed police checkpoints and then into Bangkok, where the illegal migrants are on their own. Lianqing is one of five illegals who travel this route one summer night in 2013; along the way a fellow migrant called Guo is kind to her, and their fates later become entwined. By the standards of illegals, Lianqing does well: she finds ‘underground’ jobs, saves money and finds out how and where to buy faked identity papers. But Guo does less well.
