PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Dave Johns, actor in Ken Loach’s film I, Daniel Blake from the 69th Cannes Film Festival

Dave Johns plays the role of the protagonist in I, Daniel Blake, the new film by Ken Loach, in competition at the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Dave is an English stand-up comedian, writer and actor. I, Daniel Blake marks his debut on a feature film. As per usual, Ken Loach didn’t give his actors the script of the film ahead of time, so Dave Johns told us about how he prepared for his role and about how he auditioned for the part.

I, DANIEL BLAKE: Daniel Blake, 59, has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, after a heart attack and nearly falling from a scaffold, he needs help from the State for the first time in his life. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain

  • Tor Iben, director of “Where are you going, Habibi?” #TGLFF31

To listen to the interview, click on the ► icon on the right, just above the picture of the film

Coming out in a very conservative Turkish family based in Berlin and the impossible love with a handsome straight guy. This is the story of Ibrahim, the main carachter in the new Tor Iben‘s film, which screened at the 31st Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING, HABIBI (Wo willst du hin, Habibi?): Ibrahim, called Ibo, is a good guy born into a Turkish family in Berlin and he has just finished a degree in architecture. Since he is gay, he has troubles talking about his sexual identity at home, where a strong traditional mentality rules. The only person who is helping him in the process of self-affirmation is his intellectual, open-minded uncle. When Ibo meets handsome blonde muscly wrestler Ali who, in his spare time, is a thief, a sincere and complicit relationship begins. In spite of his much vaunted heterosexuality, Ali seems to be interested in Ibo’s attentions.

A Berlin “ballad” filled with grace and a sweet virility, which go hand in hand with a cosmopolitan, breezy, multicultural city. In the finale, bulletten, the typical Berlin meatballs, play an important role. This is the second film for director Tor Iben, who debuted at the 2011 TGLFF with Cibrâil.

William Fairman, the director, and David Stuart a health operator, talking about Chemsex, which screened at the 31st Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. A cruel and sobering documentary on the dangerous phenomenon of chemical drugs and sex in the London gay community.

CHEMSEX: The term “chemsex” refers to the combination of sex and drugs, often synthetic drugs, used as a way to remove inhibitions and enhance libido, usually in the context of group sex and S/M sessions, which can last for days. This practice has spread through the British gay community, mostly in London, where it has become a real emergency. The main risks of the chemsex phenomenon are virus transmission, not least HIV, and the spread of dangerous addictions with a destructive impact on the body and the psyche. Sixteen stories, sixteen confessions made by sixteen people of all ages, especially 40- year-olds, who are the victims of a practice that has become the cause of extreme distress, isolation and illness.

Chemsex is a shocking documentary, co-produced by the English production company Peccarillo Pictures and “Vice” media, which sheds light on the dangerous risks and consequences of a practice too often considered only a marginal activity.

Aids, coming out, difficulties with parents: Holding The Man is a modern drama based on a true story. The film was awarded with a special mention at the 31st edition of the Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. We caught up with its director Neil Armfield to talk about it.

HOLDING THE MAN: In 1976, Timothy Conigrave fell in love with the captain of the football team, John Caleo. So began a relationship that was to last for 15 years, a love affair that weathered disapproval, separation and, ultimately death.

With honesty and insight, Holding the Man explores the highs and lows of their life partnership: the intimacy, constraints, temptations, and the strength of heart both men had to find when they tested positive for HIV. The story opens at Kostka, Xavier’s junior [preparatory] school in Melbourne. Here, the author begins to sexually experiment with other boys, and comes to the realisation that he is gay. Several years later, on his first day at Xavier College (the Jesuit senior school), Conigrave sees John Caleo for the first time.
