Pia Lundberg of the Swedish Film Institute as Vice President of the European Film Promotion comments on FRED about the secret of the success of the networking platform Producers on the Move, which celebrates its 17th edition this year. She also announces two new initiatives the EFP will carry on: Future Frames at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the 10 Women Directors to watch at the Sydney Film Festival. The latter initiative marks the first time EFP, the Sydney Film Festival and Variety have joined forces to initiate “European Cinema: 10 Women Filmmakers to Watch,” presenting ten exceptional European women storytellers.

EFP has set a high standard for participation and creates a tightly focused working environment involving project pitchings, 1:1 meetings as well as extensive promotion of the producers via profiles in the international trade papers. The aim of this initiative is to assist European producers in finding partners for their upcoming projects, to strengthen industry networking opportunities and to offer a platform where the producer’s potential is recognised.

FRED catches up with Alex Brendemuhl once again, this time with Louis Garrel, to talk about the film From the Land to the Moon (Mal de Pierre) by director Nicole Garcia. The film was presented in the main competition of the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Here, the two actors play respectively husband and lover of Gabrielle, played by Marion Cottillard. The film is an adaptation of an Italian novel titled Mal di Pietre. The two actors comment on working with Nicole Garcia and of the way in which they were directed for their roles.
FROM THE LAND TO THE MOON (Mal de Pierre): Gabrielle comes from a small village in the South of France, at a time when her dream of true love is considered scandalous, and even a sign of insanity. Her parents marry her to José, an honest and loving Spanish farm worker who they think will make a respectable woman of her. Despite José’s devotion to her, Gabrielle vows that she will never love José and lives like a prisoner bound by the constraints of conventional post-World War II society until the day she is sent away to a cure in the Alps to heal her kidney stones. There she meets André Sauvage, a dashing injured veteran of the Indochinese War, who rekindles the passion buried inside her. She promises they will run away together, and André seems to share her desire. Will anyone dare rob her of her right to follow her dreams?

Toni Erdmann is a film which, to cite director Maren Ade’s words, deals with a “conflict of values.” The conflict of values between a post-war father and his daughter, whom he things is conducting a career-driven life. Maren Ade also elaborates on the comic tones of her new film, presented in competition at the 69th Cannes Film Festival, since for her, comedy is something that comes from drama; like all good comedy, TonI Erdmann is fundamentally very serious.
TONI ERDMANN: Practical joker Winfried disguises himself as flashy “Toni Erdmann” to get busy Ines’ attention and change her corporate lifestyle. The father-daughter challenge reaches absurd proportions until Ines begins to see that her eccentric father deserves a place in her life…

Our interview with Hayley Squires, actress in Ken Loach’s film I, Daniel Blake, in the main competition of the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Squires takes us through the whole process of the making of the film, from the auditions to the preparation of the role and the challenges of Ken Loach’s technique – the director is known for revealing very little info and details on his film and the characters before shooting. Hayley Squires also reflects on how the situation her character, Katie, is struggling with is relatable and it is something that could happen to everybody.
I, DANIEL BLAKE: Daniel Blake, 59, has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, after a heart attack and nearly falling from a scaffold, he needs help from the State for the first time in his life. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain
