  • Rebecca Johnson – Honeytrap #LFF

    Rebecca Johnson, Writer/Director, Honeytrap

    Festival section: Dare

Layla (Jessica Sula) is 15 and has been living in Trinidad. Returned to her estranged mother in Brixton, she is faced with settling into a new home and a new city with a fresh set of rules and codes. Unsupported by her mother and spitefully rejected by her female peers, she is drawn to the brooding Troy, who marks her as his ‘Trini princess’. When that fails, she takes solace in the friendship of Shaun, another admirer, but her desperate need for acceptance leads to a tragic betrayal of his kindness. Director Rebecca Johnson was inspired by real life cases and explores gang culture from a girl’s perspective. Moving beyond the headlines, Johnson gives us an intricately layered and rarely seen perspective – firmly located in the domain of a young girl becoming a woman in a hyper-masculine world. Sula’s performance here is flawless, perfectly capturing the agonising contradiction of Layla’s choice.

London’s Communion is a flourishing artist-led community of musicians and creatives who provide a platform for the most vibrant new songwriting talent through gigs, club nights, a record label and publishing. In spring of 2012, Communion gathered a collection of its artists and embarked upon a gloriously backwards tour which covers three thousand miles in two weeks, powered entirely by five old VW camper vans. The adventure starts after a final night at Austin’s SXSW Music Festival where the bands, Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff and Bear’s Den, pile into their rides and head northeast. They play everywhere, packing out tiny venues and wowing crowds with their delicate, haunting, rousing folk-tinged songs. But heavy rainstorms, multiple breakdowns, and cramped conditions remind them that to push through sometimes you need to pull together. Beautifully captured by director James Marcus Haney, featuring Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett with narration by Gill Landry this documentary is about a modern tour, done the old fashioned way.

He talks about telling the story of piracy from the point of view of the pirates, the dangers of filming on location in Somalia and why the whole production of this film and the short documentary he made that came before it was quite an adventurous experience.

FISHING WITHOUT NETS is a tense, muscular filmmaking that tells the gripping story of a young Somali fisherman reluctantly caught up in piracy.

  • Andy Seige and Pascal Dawson – Beti And Amare #LFF

Andy Seige, Writer/Director, Pascal Dawson, Producer/Actor, Beti And Amare

    Festival section: Dare

Beti and Amare is an audacious, lower-than-micro-budget feature that blends romance, war, sci-fi and revenge film elements with a glorious level of invention. Set during the 1936 war between Italy and Ethiopia, the film sees Beti, a beautiful young woman, evade Mussolini’s advancing troops by travelling to the home of her elderly uncle, who lives alone in a cabin in the midst of a vast, barren landscape. The two settle down to a quiet existence together, but the menace of the war and local thugs are only just held at bay. When three men turn up at the property, hell bent on raping Beti, she is saved by an otherworldly presence, whom she names Amare. Reportedly delivered on a budget of under $7,000, Beti and Amare is a hugely impressive debut by Andy Siege and features a standout performance by Hiwot Asres as Beti. Quite simply, you won’t have seen anything quite like this.

  • Julius Avery – Son of a Gun #LFF

Julius Avery, Writer/Director, Son of a Gun.

    Festival Section: Official Competition.

From prison yard to gold mine, Son of a Gun is a heist thriller that swaggers and shines in the Australian sun, announcing director Julius Avery as a breakthrough talent with a knack for muscular action. The character of the young inmate ingénue has provided a rich seam in recent cinema, and fresh-faced JR (Thwaites) cuts a sympathetic figure as a rookie whose lack of guile, paired with a razor-sharp survival instinct, sees him drawn towards Brendan (McGregor) a father-figure whose paternal instincts have a poisonous edge. Out of the slammer and into the fire, JR is soon seduced by the spoils of mobster living, all fast cars and firearms, where thugs play chess and double-crosses are par for the course. Here he meets feisty Tasha, played by rising star Alicia Vikander (a century and hemisphere away from her other LFF role in Testament of Youth, p11), a street savvy beauty who has grown weary of being kept caged. Ewan McGregor positively scorches in a shark-like

role that harnesses all the charisma and livewire edge that first brought him to stardom. Son of a Gun is infused with a mythic quality, playing on a large canvas this is cinema locked and loaded.
