Nicholas Triandafyllidis, Director and screenwriter, The Sentimentalists.
Festival Section: Autumn.
FRED’s Matt Micucci meets Greek filmmaker Nicholas Triandafyllidis, who returns to Raindance with his latest work THE SENTIMENTALISTS, presented in the Autumn section of this year’s 22nd edition of the festival. We talk with him about his wanting to make a modern Greek tragedy, and his careful attention to the editing, rhythm and soundtrack in the film. We also ask him about the struggles of producing a film in Greece in these times of economic struggles and discuss the importance of a cooperative attitude in the film industry.
THE SENTIMENTALISTS is a story about two hitmen falling in love with two forbidden women – one is a prostitute, the other one is the boss’ daughter. This film is not your typical gangster film, but a romance set against the backdrop of a violent world where all the love that is born is born to die. A sweet and soft handed touch recalls classic film noirs, the narrative is Shakespearean and the whole film is enriched by visual reflections on art and culture.

Salem Kali, Actor, Dealer.
Festival Section: Autumn.
FRED’s Matt Micucci meets Salem Kali, actor in the film DEALER by Jean Luc Herbulot, which was presented in the Autumn strand at the 2014 Raindance Film Festival.
Salem plays the titular leader’s best friend and man of trust, who is a little silly and just stupid enough not to be able to pursue ambitions of his own. Yet, Salem played an even greater role in the making of the film, and tells us he was the one who got the two writers of the film to meet. Aside from that, he also takes the time to give any upcoming actors advice on how to get their careers going.

FRED’s Matt Micucci meets filmmaker JEAN LUC HERBULOT, who presented his film DEALER in the Autumn strand at the Raindance Film Festival 2014. We talk about setting is coke fuelled rollercoaster ride to hell in Paris – defying the setting’s more cinematic and romantic conventional representation on the big screen -, how the project was shaped by the film’s star and producer Dan Bronchinson’s own personal experiences and the challenges of shooting and finalizing a film on a tight schedule and with a tight budget in true guerrilla filmmaking style.
DEALER is a film about a man with a dream who is willing to do anything it takes to achieve it. The lead character Dan wants to leave his criminal life behind and take off to Australia, and his restlessness to achieve his dream leads him to making one big mistake and agreeing to deliver a kilo of coke to one of his clients. When the coke disappears, he finds himself on a race against time to give the bad guys in the tale his money back and save the life of his little daughter and mother in the process.

Fiona Gillies and Raj Sharma – Producers – The Beat Beneath My Feet
FRED’s Matt Micucci meets the producers of THE BEAT BENEATH MY FEET, which had its world premiere in the Summer section of the Raindance Film Festival. The takes us through the journey of the making of the film, a journey that started out with an idea of wanting to make a film where music was a key element. They also tell us about how they chose the right director and cast for their project, as well as what their future plans for The Beat Beneath My Feet are, after the success of the world premiere here at Raindance.
THE BEAT BENEATH my feet is the story of a lonely and introvert teenager who lets loose his frustrations by writing and playing music – though he fails to overcome his crippling shyness. In comes a new mysterious neighbour, an 80s guitar hero now on the run from the law and recovering from a serious emotional trauma. After an initial contrast, the two start bonding and as the film progresses they touch each other’s lives, offering each other a shot at redemption. The film stars a mixture of new and familiar faces. Newcomer Nicholas Galitzine is impressive in his feature film debut as the talented teenager, while Luke Perry with his performance as the once iconic rockstar Max Stone may have just have delivered his best big screen turn in this film.
