Polish artist, poet, composer, painter, writer, producer and director Lech Majewski, after revolutioning the way Art has been represented through cinema, this time has decided to explore the world of La DIVINA COMMEDIA by Dante Alighieri. In Bari to present the italian release of the fim Majewski tells FRED how he came up with the idea of choosing Dante Alighieri’s masterpiece as the protagonist’s dreamlike, oniric shelter. The parallelism between the personal tragedy in the life of the protagonist and the public tragedy in a Poland giving in to natural catastrophes, flooding and the explosion of the presidential airplane brings the audience into a visionary trip through dreams and realism.

Festival Section: Panorama Internazionale.
Fred meets with Rani Massalha on the occasion of the Italian premiere of his first feature film GIRAFFADA competing in the Panorama Internazionale at the 5th edition of the BIFEST – Bari International Film Festival. Massalha chooses to portray the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by narrating the love story between two giraffes in a Palestinian zoo. However, the film’s main focus is to talk about the father-son relationship, in the film the zoo Veterinarian Yacine and his son Ziad played respectively by Saleh Bakri and Ahmad Batra. The film points out that every kid should have the right to act as a kid and be treated as one whatever the social and political situation in the background is. Ziad, this stubborn and sometimes annoying child, will be the reason why his father will finally find the strength to face adversities and fight the conflict, even if it’s only to save a female giraffe and her family.

Filmmaker Anna Margarita Albelo and actress Guinevere Turner talk to FRED about the film WHO’S AFRAID OF VAGINA WOLF?, from the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival.
Anna Margarita Albelo (Hooters) returns to our screens with this wonderful semi-autobiographical offering about a filmmaker named Anna who at 40 is still single and living in her friend’s garage. Flanked by best friends (Guinevere Turner and True Blood’s Carrie Preston), Anna is set move on from failing to get film grants and dancing about in a vagina costume. She is finally forced out of her rut when she meets the sexy post-feminist Katia, and offers her the lead in her new movie to impress her, but then has to speed-write a script for her to star in and turns for inspiration to Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Funny, brutally honest and fabulously silly.

Shaun Kadlec, Co-director and co-producer, Born This Way.
Festival Section: Minds.
FRED meets filmmaker Shaun Kadlec at the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival. Shaun directed and produced the documentary BORN THIS WAY along with Deb Tullmann.
At a time when rights around the world are being stripped away, it’s more important than ever to highlight stories from places that punish you for being who you are. An excellent documentary about prejudice against the lesbian and gay community in Cameroon, Born this Way does exactly that. Filming with secret cameras and under constant threat of being discovered and deported, Kadlec and Tullmann follow four brave gay and lesbian Cameroonians who discuss candidly the difficulty of being queer in a country where homosexuality is illegal. While the reality of life is bleak, the film shows there is hope for LGBT people, whether it is inside the sanctuary that is ‘Alternatives Cameroun’, the country’s first LGBT centre, or at the hands of the amazing human rights lawyer Alice Nkom who is fighting to protect LGBT rights. A timely and important documentary.
