  • Kazuhiro Soda – Campaign 2 (Senkyo 2)
    Kazuhiro Soda – Director – Campaign 2 (Senkyo 2)
    Festival section: International Competition
The New York-based Japanese herald of’observational cinema’ goes back to Kawasaki to film the second campaign for City Council of Kazuhiko Yamauchi, this time not only independently from the LDP but against it – and its pro-nuclear positions. For hardly a month has gone by since Fukushima, and no one but him seems to notice the silence around the subject. With no means and no hope of being heard, but a sense of humour, shock and distance rather fitting to the surreal atmosphere of this campaign, Yama-san becomes an absurd figure: the only sane character in an insane situation.

  • Beth Harrington – The Winding Stream

Beth Harrington – filmmaker – The Winding Stream

Festival section: 24 Beats Per Second

Beth Harrington, an award-winning independent producer, director and writer, talks to FRED about her new music documentary  “The Winding Stream”, a film that  tells the story of the American roots music dynasty, the Carters and the Cashes.

One of the best-loved names in country music, the Carters didn’t just play the music of their hill country upbringing. They helped invent it and influenced generations of musicians along the way, including one young man who, at first blush, seemed more renegade than reverent adherent – Johnny Cash. He would be the one to lift up the Carter legacy. The film story of how the family rallied to help him beat back the demon of substance abuse and how he promoted the Carters name and music is one of tremendous reciprocity and love.

  • Stephen Silha – Max St.Romain – Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton

Stephen Silha and Max St.Romain – Co-Director and Co-Producer – Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton

    Festival section: Minds

FRED talks to filmmaker Stephen Silha and producer Max St Romain about their documentary on the life and works of filmmaker, poet and artist James Broughton – BIG JOY: THE ADVENTURES OF JAMES BROUGHTON.

What or who is Big Joy? Big Joy is James Broughton, pioneer of experimental cinema in the 1930s, and trickster poet who was a precursor to the beat movement in San Francisco. BIG JOY is a documentary that explores the twists and turns in the life of a very colorful character, plus how art has the power to save lives and make the world a better place. Broughton is a role model of living one’s life to the fullest, or “follow your own weird” as he called it. BIG JOY features interviews with experts, colleagues, friends and lovers, plus images from his films, and the words of many of his kooky poems.

    Festival Section: Hearts.

With a trail of broken hearts behind her, Tru believes she’ll always be the one to leave first. Then she meets Alice, the widowed mother of her friend. Suddenly here is someone who can break through Tru’s defences and make her stay. But as the saying goes, the path to true love never does run smooth and before they can explore their burgeoning feelings for each other, Alice’s jealous daughter is doing everything to stop the relationship. With strong central performances and a wintry Toronto backdrop skillfully used, Tru Love is a story about love, loss and the strength it takes to accept both.

  • Charles Lum and James Kleinmann – Age of Consent

Charles Lum ( Co-director and co-producer), James Kleinmann (Co-producer), Age of Consent.

    Festival Section: Bodies.

Co-director and co-producer Charles Lum and co-producer James Kleinmann talk about their documentary AGE OF CONSENT, that was presented at the BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival.

This documentary by festival favourites Lum and Verow tells the story of The Hoist (open since 1996 and now one of London’s only surviving leather bars) and in doing so tells the story of gay sex from decriminalisation to Grindr, taking in police entrapment, the Spanner case, safer sex and Section 28. Age of Consent is informative and eye-opening – did you know more gay men were arrested and convicted of gross indecency in 1989 than in 1966? – while being playful, funny and downright filthy. Described by the barman as a ‘sneaky, sexy, dirty wee hole’, The Hoist and its patrons could be seen as representing the antithesis of the recent trend in mainstream gay politics towards assimilation. But, with encroaching gentrification and more people using the internet to hook up, what does the future hold?
